Soudai

Soudai, named after the word Sōdai meaning "splendid" kept away from her parents when times were tough, instead hanging out with Charlie, despite being told not to. The two only grew closer and Soudai learned how to take care of herself, finding herself in the Ice Flight and joining a rather small Frost Clan. She lived there, scavanging, digging and taking care of familiars until finally after thick and thin, Soudai and Charlie were able to reunite and life in the clan together as a loving couple. Now they've raised a short-tempered, but intelligent little witch - their son.

Soudai no longer scavanges for the clan. With a rise in population she much prefers to use all of her time to take care of familiars, more than anything else.

"WAIT!"
The maroon skydancer stopped in his tracks as the Nocturne's voice reached him. Now that he wasn't running, the shouter let herself catch her breath.
"Who are you?"
"No time to talk, we have to get away!"
"I can't r-run like you! You can just..."
The yellow Nocturne had to take another deep breath in just to be able to talk properly.
"You can just l-leave me!"
"NO!"
The skydancer's sudden reply startled the other.
"Sorry, I'm Charlie. I'll explain more later, okay? You'll be able to rest soon." Charlie said, silently scolding himself for raising his voice.

Before they could get to move on, ruffling from the bushes could be heard. Out came other hatchlings, older than the Nocturne but younger than Charlie.
"There you are, you freak!" a blue one spat out at the Nocturne.
N-no... it was an accident...
Words couldn't form on her tongue. All she had were her thoughts in front of dragons capable of hurting her in any way or form, even killing.
As she felt completely alone, Charlie walked to stand before her and the Nocturne was brought back to reality. One where she wasn't all alone with her thoughts.
"What do you think you're doing!?" the blue screeched at Charlie.
"I should be the one asking you the same thing!" Charlie answered with a question, wearing a toothy grin.
"Don't get yourself into situations you can't get out of, she's ours to deal with!"
"I say life has no room for cheating. If you're gonna fight then fight fair!"
Charlie's smirk only grew and that infuriated the supposed lead of the group of three they were standing up against.

"Damn you!" Was all he said, before thrashing at the Skydancer. Charlie didn't move and stood his ground. That made me panic a little. If he wouldn't move, he'll be knocked out! I had quickly gone to his side, ready to push him aside it he really wouldn't budge. "CHARLIE!"
The Skydancer jumped, landing on the blue hatchling and pushed him into the ground with a kick to leap off.
"Got something more to say?" Before Charlie would receive a reply, another one of the small group charged at him. Charlie quickly jumped, landing behind the runner and bit her as soon as he stopped to turn around. The third dragon wouldn't even bother, he looked scared if anything.

The three didn't say a word. They only growled and shot mean looks at us before they were out of sight.
"Huh. They gave up quick... not that I'm complaining though."
"You're really skilled." Was all I could say at the moment.
"I know, I know! I was just warming up!"
I didn't have the nerve to break the silence that now laid upon us.

"Sorry for pushing you earlier. I didn't really feel like fighting when you could've been in danger."
"It's o-ok... thanks. Why though?"
"You expect me to stand by as a weakling gets ganged up on?"
"..."
"Ah no! Sorry! I didn't mean it like that!"
"It's ok, you're not wrong."
"No way! Maybe you're not the best fighter, so what? You're great at other things!"
"How come?"
"We live in the same clan after all! I don't know much but from what I've seen, you're really kind... and smart!"
I could feel the heat creeping in onto my face, how could he say that? There's no way he's being serious!
"Speaking of which, what's your name?"
"I don't have one."
"Eh? Really?"
"Really."
"Why?"
"Nobody's bothered to give me one yet. I haven't even seen my parents, so..."
"Can I name you?"
"You? I don't know... what'd it be?"
"Soudai!"
"Sou-dai? That sounds weird."
"It's got a meaning y'know?"
"What meaning?"
"It means splendid!"
This was too much, I hid my face from embarrasment. Though, I didn't expect to...
"H-hey... are you okay?"
"Y-yeah," I replied in much higher pitch, voice cracking. Why was I crying? Is it because of Charlie?
As if reading my mind, he asks "Is it because of me?"
This time I couldn't reply, all that would've come out would have been a pathetic whimper. It wouldn't have made much of a difference though. I must've looked so helpless, I start crying too easily and I hated myself for that. Why? Why was I crying right there and then? I was just saved from a bunch of hatchlings like me! Oh... that must be it. That's why?

Charlie came closer and wrapped his wing around me, soft mixture of fur and feathers brushing against my scales.
"Soudai sounds good."

"Over here Soudai!"
I ran up to Charlie, as I was now able to locate him.
"Sorry I'm late!"
"Hey it's okay! No sweat!"
I peeked to the side, seeing Moia, Charlie's mother there. She was giving me a cold glare as always. Thankfully, she was taken away, there was some business for her to go throught before...
"Well I guess it's time."
Those were the words I didn't want to hear Charlie say, but there was nothing I nor him could do.
"Do you really have to go?"
"It's alright, I'll-"
"What if you'll die?"
"... Don't think like that, instead, why not try and believe in me?"
"I do believe in you! But... Anything could happen... It's a cruel war going on there, what are the changes of a youngster who was dragged in against his will like you surviving?"
"..."
"A-ah... Sorry! That came out wrong!"
Suddenly Charlie burts into laughter. It was such a nice sound. I never understood how a laugh can be appriciatted to this extent, but it was. It felt like everything faded beyond our sight. No dragons, no problems, no war... just us. It made me feel like everything was okay, only to be brought back to the harsh reality.
"That's what I said two years ago! Some Deja Vu that is!"
Finally understanding what he was laughing at, we chuckled together before falling into silence once again.
"Heh, thanks. That helped me cheer up!"
"...I'm glad!"
"Look, I'll be back in one piece, you'll see."
"Promise?"
Tears started prickling at the corners of my eyes as Charlie put his forehead against mine.
"I promise."
In this time spam we hadn't confessed to each other. I was too much of a coward to make the first move in any way. Even so, I was much more confident thanks to Charlie, he had taught me so much, he had given so much. That was the kind of luxury I could only dream of. I was in love. I'm sure he knew, and nothing he did ever made me think that he didn't feel the same way. Still, I was afraid of losing all of this, it was my worst nightmare. But... If he was gonna come back well and alive... He would! He promised!
Then maybe I'll gather enough confidence to step forward.
"See you, Soudai,"
I was suddenly brought back to reality and quickly wiped the tears from my eyes before staring back at him.
"See you!"
