______ Sickness and disease have their god, and a symphony of prayer cannot move him. He is a conductor of tragedy and a purveyor of ruin, and yet he is not without feeling. It is said that he manifested from a slew of demons, monsters, or of evil intentions escaped from Pandora’s box. The name given to this amalgamation of horror, is Ixis. ______

______The deity of illness is also a deity of ideals. He knows that he is an essential force in the world, that it cannot flourish without him. For Ixis is the reaper who clears the field of what crowds it, and gives breath to the stifled soil. But he has also stood before sweltering fields of fire, and left the scorched soil barren.

______How does such a being conduct himself? The answer is simple.

______With pride.

______For what, pray tell, flees more swiftly before the advance of sickness than the fragile bloom of youth? What smothers genius and cuts down the mighty with more fatality than the encroaching shroud of disease? What other prison has no need for bars?

______None reign over the living as he does.

______He flashes through a mortal’s life like a wildfire, and it is often he who withered the grass, he who blew upon the flames, he who set the cinders flying, and he who cast the ashen remains into the wind. He does not stand to be ignored, and cannot abide the fact that he is too often forgotten. He, who can take all, who can drain all things of their beauty and pleasure, should not be overlooked. For this, Ixis enjoys appearing where he is not expected. And rarely does he appear without his smile.

______”Too much light is blinding,” are his words, to describe the irony of his work. He says that neither life nor death reveal the topography of the soul as illness can. Too much light blinds. Too little, and there is also blindness. But Ixis dims the life of the mortal, and in this perfect balance, what was hidden or intangible is made visible and may even be held.

______“Too much light is blinding,” so no emotion or drive is allowed an unequal share of his attention. He maintains balance, on a needle point over a precipice. He is a god who does not shine, but casts others in shadow with his presence. He looms, he waits, he thinks and bides his time. Immortal things do not interest him. The mortal, the fleeting, the weak body that contains the immortal soul - these fascinate him. Some say that he is worldly, and he will not deny it.

______Those who have lost their ignorance revere him. And their faith never wavers, once it has taken root. Life and death, the fates, and the beings of pain and misery do not bother him. They are all allies, in one way or another. And, at times, he has led them.

______The self-assurance of an indefatigable will and an undeniable capacity to dominate even in the face of failure, has rarely been matched by any other god. And, of course, Ixis knows this. He is aware of who and what he is, and makes sure others understand him. Because, as it has been said, he is in part a teacher. He will tutor any god with regards to their duties and the expectations that have been laid upon them. But he will hold his tongue if others disgrace themselves. He has an understanding of time that few immortals attain. Mere hours of suffering can shift a life. Therefore, great or small, lengths of time are not to be underestimated. He holds true to his belief that time allows all things to pass, as they grow more distant from the present, and new experiences lay old memories to rest.

______Those crippled by illness can find ways to rebuild their bodies, so those crippled by momentary failure should be able to do likewise.

______Even he, as a god, has known failure. But never has he suffered from failure. There is no need for him to suffer, to quake with shame, regret, or guilt. Anything that is stronger than it should be becomes a liability. His power is as it should be. His rate of growth is also as it should be. The way in which he accepts his failures and expects to encounter new ones in the future, does not permit suffering. He is only learning.

______And in this, there is calm. Ixis is trusted, respected, though not loved by the gods. And he needs no love. Love is not what sustains him, far from it. Love can even be wielded against him. His past has made him wary - some might say wise. Anything as bright as love must certainly be blinding. So he who revels in observing, testing, and dissecting, relies on more balanced drives. Like those of acquiring knowledge, skill, or wisdom.

______That does not mean he cannot be tempted. Slow feelings, that grow like an ache, that wear down through their persistence and consistency may produce vulnerabilities.

______He does not like to concentrate on any single specific point, but prefers to spread out and be shared among many. He infects mortals and immortals alike with his words…

______So, if “too much light is blinding,” how much light does one require?

______Many have asked, but Ixis will not yield the answer. It is not one that can be expressed in words – only experience. That experience, of course, he will gladly bestow.
