The blood beneath her claws is hard and black with age. It cracks as she moves, her joints stiffly creaking like banners snapping in the wind. Cold and hard, the earth beneath her feet is unforgiving, and her heels leave nothing but shallow impressions in her wake as she limps headfirst into the wind. Is this her destined end? She shivers beneath her cloak, her healer's robes long shredded to ribbons too thin to be tourniquets. Is this the fate her god has wished upon her? It seems so cruel, to leave one so devout to the sanctity of life to die of something she cannot save herself from. It seems so, so cruel, but right. For she has failed her god, on this barren earth so far from where she was born, so far from where he reigns. She has failed her god and let her legion die in this frozen waste, and so it seems perfectly fitting for her to plod on here, endlessly, eternally, until her skin sloughs from her bones and her feet freeze to the ice and the blood beneath her claws flakes and blows away with the snow, leaving her unburdened and timeless and forgotten. Yes, she thinks, it is just.
