His claws sunk into the great redwood's ruddy bark.

Wildclaws were not meant to climb trees.

But here he was, wasn't he?

Through the thick jungle canopy, it was difficult to fly- and while he had quite easily grabbed onto the bark on the trunk of the tree and easily clambered up at first, as he went further and further out onto the limbs, it became more perilous by the moment. Of course, he had told everyone he was a hunter, but his clan had been lacking in insect hunters this week, and he had been unceremoniously drafted into the cause. He would have to learn to hone his skills in this area eventually, they had told him- and now was as good of a time as any to start.

But no amount of their encouragement was enough to stop the cracking of tree branches behind him as he shimmied his body towards the beehive out on its edge.

And at the same time, his reckless abandon told him the only answer to a quickly breaking platform was simply to move more quickly than it could break.

With a flourish, abandoning his tentative grip on the limb and instead pushing all of his weight into the trunk of the tree once more, he tensed all his muscles-

and sprung.

To his credit, he did get the beehive, easily grasping it between his front claws. In fact, thanks to the honey that was now gushing out of it, it was practically glued to them.

He also 'got' the rest of the branch, as its connection to the tree shattered with a crack like thunder from trying to hold his weight at its very tip.

Not to mention the few more limbs and twigs he 'got' as well during his crashing, plummeting journey to the jungle's leafy floor. Some scrapes and cuts all over his wings, too- but he'd just consider those a bonus.

All in a day's work, he thought-

half a second before he hit the ground.
