PAST ECHOES
May history light the way to the future.
earth_0.pnglight_3.png
Founded on the Shattered Plains, they have settled outside the Beacon of the Radiant Eye.

Purified by sea breezes and warmed by hearths, Past Echoes is a fusion of the radiance of Light and the warmth of Earth. Peaceful visitors and wanderers looking for a new home are always welcome. They pay tribute to both Earthshaker and Lightweaver, dedicated to remembering their roots as they look towards their future.

The temple of Past Echoes, situated just outside the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, is a relic from the First Age. It sprawls ungainly and awkward on the otherwise untarnished plains. But far from being a dead and crumbling ruin, it bursts with energy. Movement, sound and color interweave in a merry tapestry. Strange birds, unlike any seen on Sornieth, laugh from the tops of every pillar. Rumors say they come from a far-off land. Enterprising birdwatchers can glimpse them and any number of other species within the temple’s walls. The birds are considered omens of good luck and secondary residents of the temple. The clan encourages them to stay by sneaking them treats, often in hopes of a blessing for a dig. If the birds call in the middle of the day, the clanmembers all run for cover—it’s a sure sign of rain. They make excellent alarm clocks too; the residents are awoken every morning by their cries.

The inside of the temple is even more chaotic than the outside. Patches of dirt show through the sunken marble floors, adding a touch of homeliness to the holy place. A rainbow of recovered textiles and rugs have been restored and hung on the stark white walls. Visitors can see everything from Beastclan tapestries to depictions of forgotten battles in their threads. Ancient pottery, faithfully repaired, peeks from every alcove. Books are scattered across the floor and topped with haphazard bowls of fruit and other foods. Half-restored discoveries clutter the many workbenches and tabletops, often accompanied by fixated scholars. Enchanted candles float among them to illuminate their work night and day, the smoke whisked away by the purifying sea air.

Though disorganized and chaotic, the clutter is comfortable, giving the otherwise stark and airy temple a lived-in feeling. It is less a place of worship than a vast home, thanks to the efforts of its founders; the warmth of Dragonhome infuses every corner. In winter, hired Fire dragons travel with live embers to light the clan’s many fireplaces, making the warm and cozy temple even warmer and cozier. The clan’s older members gather around the hearths to remember and tell stories of the past.

Dragons come and go, chattering and laughing. Conversation echoes up and down the halls, paused only at midday and sunrise—a moment of quiet contemplation of both Lightweaver and Earthshaker. Their worship of their gods is more a way of life than a system of worship. Those with differing beliefs are welcome here, so long as they bring knowledge and pay tribute to the God whose lands they live in.

Some of the inhabitants are archaeologists, some are scholars, some are simply wanderers. Visitors are always welcome so long as they obey the rules. In the spirit of their first founders, the tribunal is just, more focused on restitution and rehabilitation than punishment. Because of their efforts, the temple remains a peaceful resting place for dragons of all kinds. It’s not uncommon to see a merchant from Arcane or a couple travelers from Plague relaxing within the temple’s walls. Some have even chosen to stay, entranced by the warmth and peace.

The culture now encourages the flourishing artisan community. There is a steady flow of visitors looking to buy new pottery, try out the newest barrel of wine, or join the small crowd surrounding a musician. Pop-up shops are common with learning hatchlings, and friendly beastclan members lay out creations near footpaths. There are more permanent shops for full time creators, and members of Past Echoes send deliveries through caravans and the postal service to all over Sornieth. The clan has a small army of chefs who are artisans in their own right and are equipped with a full kitchen, filled with the newest electric appliances from Lightning. Aspiring chefs are tasked with tending the culinary garden, the hunting troupe supplies plenty of meat, and being near the cliffs leads to an abundance of fish. The cliffs also lend themselves to plenty of recreational swimming.

Most dragons reside in the temple’s many rooms, but some prefer to dig their own burrows in the soil surrounding the building. Wherever they choose to live, their dens are warm and bright. Often stuffed with blankets and pillows along with their works in progress, they are as cluttered as the rest of the temple. They decorate their homes and the rest of the temple with everything from framed illuminated manuscripts to precious jewels to sunglass in every color -- anything that reminds them of the earth and catches the light just right. Jewelers and glassblowers do a bustling trade here.

But the temple wasn’t always so well loved. Its history is shadowed and mostly lost. Excavations and restorations of the various rooms have yielded very little information. Once a shrine to a fallen and forgotten god of the First Age, the temple sat empty for many years thanks to rumors of hauntings by its first denizens. Though Light dragons are not generally prone to superstition, they would still give the place a wide berth. Too many had seen the results of a nasty curse or forgotten spell to risk venturing inside.

It would fall to a group of Earth dragons to restore the temple. They were a young clan, barely eking out a living on the desolate Shattered Plain. But despite the desperation and worry, the early days of the clan were marked with joy and friendship. They had come from many different backgrounds and often disagreed, but they rubbed along as peacefully as they possibly could. Their founders, a Arcaneborn pair, had been wise and fair. Looked upon with something akin to reverence, they were beloved and respected.

Then their leaders were unexpectedly called away into a fate unknown. Unable to resist the pull, they left in the middle of the night without a single word and were never heard from again. No matter how many scouting parties were sent to find them, not a single trace of them could be found. The clan, shocked and unmoored, nearly fell into ruins. Facing possible destruction, some of the remaining members decided they needed a fresh start. But where? And how?

The answer came in the form of a rumor and a talkative courier: there was a decaying temple, not for the faint of heart, that might hold secrets in its walls. The knowledge hidden within was a source of frustration for the curious yet cowardly Light dragons. Stout excavators and archaeologists were wanted.

They were all were in favor of pursuing the rumor. Bound together by their new purpose, they set off immediately. Many of them took the time to save some relic of their former lives—a small painting, a detailed scroll, even something as small as a stone. Little bits of the old clan followed them to their new home.

Though the temple was nearly uninhabitable, they agreed it would be their first project. Its pink-veined columns were beautiful—it had good bones underneath its cloak of cobwebs and dust. They would make it into a sanctuary and document their findings at the same time. Rumors of hauntings and curses were no matter. Used to strange things crawling out of the crypts of their homeland, they laughed at something as insubstantial as ghosts. They prepared to face the worst, though it never came. The rumors were only ever rumors.

The dragons leaned into their task. As they renewed the temple, their spirits lifted. The musty halls grew airier and brighter by the day. Small victories led to larger victories. The temple was eventually cleansed and reborn after months of renovation. Though it was still crumbling in places and retained an air of abandonment they could never quite chase off, they adored it. It was their home and they had made it themselves.

They rechristened it as the home of Past Echoes. It is dedicated to the lost and those who would find their roots by looking to the knowledge of the past. The objects that the members of the former clan took with them are enshrined in a special alcove in the main room. It’s a reminder that they will always carry the past with them—and that’s okay.

Now, the reminisces of the aging founders dragons are full of joy. They tell long tales about how they first came together and how far they’ve come since their lives in Dragonhome. The tales amuse the hatchlings during the dark winter season and foster a sense of unity in the clan. Their progenitors have finally returned in recent months to quiet fanfare only by the eldest. They are different in form and color- elegant Pearlcatcher bodies that looked nothing like the terse leaders described in the oral history of the clan. Nevertheless, they have carved out a permanent place for their return in the Sunbeam Ruins. Though all remember the past with a warm heart, they look to the future with bright eyes.
