Biography
Ethical, shmethical. In Clan Dark-Blood, someone has to be ready to make a handy profit to keep the clan afloat, and that takes more ruthlessness than some dragons have. One must be careful and cunning, and more important, one must be acutely aware of what their products are worth, and how to sell them at prices well beyond that. These qualities are difficult to find in a single soul, and yet Covert has them in spades.
He was practically born into the business of buy, sell, repeat. His original home in the Ashfall Wastes was located in the Blacksand Annex, a hot spot for traders in a variety of goods. Without any parents to watch over him or keep him out of the thick of things, Covert threw himself headlong into it all, getting underfoot day in and day out in his attempts to learn the lingo and the trade. He had a knack for it, most folks agreed, except for that sly little twitch of his fins that always proved that he was angling for more treasure than any knowledgeable buyer would be willing to part with. More remarkable was that he usually got that treasure, and even had a few returning customers who were never aware that they were being duped.
Now, he's on the straight and narrow. Mostly. Working for a clan under the Shadowbinder's protection means there will always be tricks up everyone's sleeves, but he's not as shady as he used to be about his wares. For the most part, he's just a shrewd merchant who haggles well and prices only the slightest bit on the expensive side, though he sells items that are well worth a little extra treasure on top. It is said, though, that if you show him the right objects or say the right words, he will offer up some of his more valuable items, the ones that really shouldn't be on the table, the ones most clans would object to anyone owning in the first place. But that's only a rumor, right?
Then again, he covers his nest in black stones that drip with amber, and every time he acquires a new stone, he also seems to be much richer by the end of the night. Perhaps it is these rocks that he treasures so much that earn one a private look at his obscure wares. And perhaps not. Covert will never tell, and no one else can seem to discover the truth either.
But in the meantime, while you think about it, have a look around. See if anything catches your eye. There's no merchant better unless you hike well away from Clan Dark-Blood, and it never hurts to take home a souvenir, right? Just watch your wallet a little closely. Those purchases add up.
