- Calavera

Discarded from his birth clan because his skull-like markings were seen as a bad omen, Calavera grew up learning to be self-reliant. He actually learned that lesson badly. Very badly.

Calavera spent most of his adolescence hovering on the outskirts of established clans to satisfy his need for socialization, even if it was never quite enough. He'd mingle some, swapping gossip and flirting with hot guys until he'd overstayed his welcome and the coatl in the clan, put off by his faded plumage like his original clan had been, banished him. (There are also quite a few rumors about him stealing dragons from their established mates, something that's made him many enemies.)

Personality-wise, Calavera is extremely pleasant in casual conversation, surprisingly friendly for a 'creepy' dragon with an almost spectral appearance. He has, however, come around to liking skeletal aesthetics; while he was ashamed of his appearance when he was younger, as an adult he embraces it in defiance. Since he's spent most of his young life watching others from the shadows, Calavera is extremely good at reading emotions and keeping harmony (or sowing discord, if he so wishes). His people skills are something Tiamat uses to run the clan, and in some respects Calavera is the actual leader even if Tiamat is in name. She'd gladly concede it, but he likes to keep it... hidden.

You can get away with more machinations if no one can pinpoint the source, after all.

Like many Shadow dragons, Calavera is enthralled by gambling, and he makes bets often with other dragons. Most of his permanent clanmates know better than to take him up on this - rumors abound that he cheats shamelessly - but he manages to ensnare clueless dragons often enough.

Are all the rumors true? Who knows...?

In some ways, Tiamat is Calavera’s only true friend.

She found him alone and clanless, watching others from the shadows. Quickly, she recognized that his people skills far exceeded hers - Tiamat had discovered that she was well-liked, but she was not capable of manipulation. She was, however, shrewd enough to realize that, to some extent, that was necessary to organize a clan.

So she offered him a deal: work with her to establish and run her clan, or continue living on the fringes, unlikely to ever be accepted anywhere else. She certainly didn’t mean it as an ultimatum, but Calavera’s mind is wired to see these choices like a game of chess, always weighing his next move.

Mostly, life in Bird Of Paradise remains the same, even all these years later: he’s still often quietly watching from the sidelines, offering merely a hint and letting others careen themselves into whatever stupid drama they’re involved in. The difference now is that he’s doing something worthwhile with his skills, protecting others more often than provoking them. As he’s watched his and Tia’s project flourish over the years, he can’t help but feel pride.

Calavera gets along well with Rubellite, head of the neighboring allied clan that resides on Bird Of Paradise territory.

Extremely well.

Both are dragons surrounded by people they like who are still strangely alone. Will anyone ever make Rubellite happy? Will anyone ever show any lasting interest in Calavera? Will they perhaps be able to provide that for each other...? The answer isn’t clear - despite knowing each other for years at this point, the two have held each other at arm’s length emotionally. Perhaps they’ll find out the answer someday... or perhaps they won’t. This is one bet Calavera isn’t willing to make in advance.
