Mercury was created as some sort of helpful spirit. He truly wants to help people/dragons, but he's ancient, and he's seen so much loss and pain and horrible things that he's sort of burned out. At this point, he just wants to rest, yet whenever he gets "The Call" that draws him to help someone he just can't resist.
