TOPIC | These dragons shouldn't be compatible...

...should they?

Okay, I'm very puzzled and could use some help.

I just had a lucky hatch from my breeding project. As such, I'm clearing out all of my breeding stock who are too close in bloodline to her to be bred.

From everything I've encountered in the past, every ancestor from the great-great-grandparent on down (and their own offspring, etc) is incompatible with a given dragon. Five generations, in other words.

So here's the problem:

54609694 (lucky hatch)
52249696 (her father)
51076723 (her grandfather, 52249696's father)
48988095 (her great-grandfather, 51076723's father)
35471936 (her great-great-grandfather, 48988095's father)

(You can also just follow her patrilineal line straight back.)

So ID #35471936 is the great-great grandfather of my lucky hatch. They are four generations apart. They should not be compatible.

And yet they are, according to Assay Bloodlines.

By contrast, if you follow her matrilineal line back four generations:

54609694 (lucky hatch)
52430860 (her mother)
50351022 (her grandmother)
48308077 (her great-grandmother)
10077795 (her great-great-grandmother)

she and her great-great grandmother are not compatible. (But she is with her great-great-great grandmother, ID #8398777 - five generations away, as it should be.)

Is this a bug, or am I skipping a step in her lineage?

Okay, this is really bizarre - I just checked a completely unrelated dragon and found the same phenomenon: he's compatible with his patrilineal line four generations back but not his matrilineal.

(As to why I was checking this in the first place: I don't own her great-great-grandfather, but I see his offspring pop up on the AH from time to time when I'm looking for project stock. Theoretically those offspring should also be incompatible with my lucky hatch, but from what I can tell they aren't. However, I don't want to buy one in the future and then find out that this was a bug that's been resolved.)

I'm not sure what else can be tested but I did toss 'em both in the assay bloodlines and it also tells me that they're compatible.

The only odd thing worth note is that Frostbite's image is broken but I don't use the assay tool enough to know if that's normal

No idea as to why this happens but subscribing to the thread just to see if we can get an answer

[/quote] By both, you mean her and the GG-grandfather, but not the GG-grandmother? (Just wanted to check that we're getting the same results to verify that this is actually happening and not a mistake on my part.) (And huh, his image shows up for me when I try it.)

I suppose one way to test what's up would be to actually try to breed a dragon this happens to to see if they are truly compatible or if it's a bug with assay bloodlines.

@Lara8

Ah, sorry I just meant the GG-grandfather. The grandmother shows up as incompatible listing herself as the reason.

To note her picture also doesn't show up for me... the hatchling does but neither adult has... it might just be the work computer I'm on being goofy though.

Also, this might be completely off but for some reason I have the vague memory of hearing about something like this before? As a guess, would you remember how the 'infertile' dragons used to be created? I doubt it's totally connected since it would have had to have happened on a larger scale by people trying for project dragons and accidentally breeding GGG males but I can't think of where else I've seen this pop up or if I'm just miss-remembering entirely

Edit: Maybe it's more with the bloodline checker. That has a small handful of it's own assorted bugs and issues - the most notible being the one where dragons show up as compatible but actually arent - I'm not sure if that was ever fixed and if it wasn't this could be why it pops up more often then the other issues. At least in my experience

@AlphaSobek I think the images get broken if there's an extra space behind them, as sometimes happens when copying and pasting the ID number

I wasn't here when making infertile dragons was a thing; I just poked around in search, and there are lots of people selling or showing them off, but nobody explaining exactly how the bug worked (if indeed it was understood and not just random).

But yeah, @Beastface , if anyone has access to a dragon and their patrilineal GG-grandfather, I'd be very interested to hear what happens. Who knows, you might get a valuable infertile dragon out of it.
