TOPIC | First Digital Art Attempt
So my parents bought me a tablet for my birthday, and I decided to test it out. I'm used to traditional art, so it's difficult getting used to all the layers and such. I commemorated the event by drawing a portrait of my progen! I messed up in several spots, but overall I think it was a decent first attempt. Any advice on how to improve with the tablet or places I could look to watch helpful (not completely boring) tutorials? Sorry if I'm not using this forum correctly, it's my first time talking about my art here.

Hi there! That must be sooo exciting for you! Getting a tablet opens up so many doors for you in terms of art! Might I ask what program you use to draw?

FireAlpaca is a free drawing app that seems to work pretty great.
If you're willing to spend, Paint Tool Sai or Clip Studio Paint are also good and popular options.

As for drawing on the tablet, you have to just keep on practicing to get used to it!

Try keeping your tablet directly in front of your screen and not off to the side so that things aren't skewed and I suggest like having a specific place to put the tablet pen (like sliding it on the loop off to the side of the tablet for instance).

Lol keep that tablet cord safe and try not to stretch or bend it. Because nothing is worse than having to go buy a new one sdlkfjdskfjs

Thank you for all the advice! At the moment I'm using gimp since it's free. I considered buying Sai since I've heard a lot of people like it, but for cost reasons I'll be sticking with gimp for a while.

It's definitely going to take practice to get used to it. I know layers can be very helpful, so I'm trying to get into the habit of using them. It's very different than traditional, but it allows for so many cool features to try out.

I'd highly recommend Krita! It's what I've been using for a while and it is a pretty broad program, and supports downloading and installing new brushes and that sort of thing. It's just a photoshop clone but I really enjoy using it.

Heyo! It looks so good, I can't wait for you to get comfortable with digital art!

Here's some advice when starting out digital art: Experiment. Literally, grab as many programs as you can, try out all the demos and trials, etc. Finding the right program is actually pretty important, especially when trying to develop your skills. As well as finding a good program, you need good brushes. This can usually be done with just messing around with the settings (if you have SAI, there are many people out there who share their settings).

I personally use Clip Studio, which I see is between Photoshop and SAI in terms of difficulty to use, flexibility, etc. What I really like about it is all the available brushes it provides as well as the library many contribute to. What really boosted the quality of my art was finding the right brushes.

...Sorry, that was long =_= I do love helping so ask me any questions and I'll try my best to answer them~ ^^

Thank you for the compliment and advice. I'm going through and trying different programs right now, so I'll add your suggestions to the list! I definitely need to try different brushes to add texture. There's just so much to do that its going to take me a while to figure it out. If I have any questions going forward, I'll definitely ask!
