GRIFFIN SUBSPECIES

Welcome to my Griffin Subspecies!

Registered Griffins

Selling and Buying Thread

Art thread

{XX}

Hopefully this subspecies will always be added to and improved, so if you have any ideas, the Planning thread is here.

This is my first subspecies, so ideas, thoughts and helpful criticism is always welcome. On this thread feel free to talk about the subspecies, the lore, your griffins, and just the subspecies in general! You can also ask to be put on the pinglist in this thread.

In this sub-species, the Primary's colour and gene determine the Bird Variant.
The Secondary's colour and gene determine the Cat Variant.

At the current moment, there is no specific Tertiary colours & Genes unless otherwise specified (In the case of Rare and Uncommon Variants)

LORE

How they came about:

Not that long ago there were no griffins at all. Then the rumours started to arrive, the first coming in from the southern regions, such as the Southern Icefield and the Shifting Expanse. Most were disregarded as simple gossip or hatchling tales. A dragon growing feathers and fur without a breed change? There was little wonder as to why no one listened.

Soon the rumours grew in number and validity, until it was clear they were rumours no more, and these dragons were pronounced griffins, and that they were part of their own subspecies, with many different variants.

Griffins continue to change inexplicably from dragons into griffins, and beginning to hatch from eggs. These griffins are then usually treated far differently ranging from being chased out, examined carefully, or treated like any other dragon, depending on the clan. Some of these chased-out griffins have begun forming their own miniature clans, which have been called prides.

Main changes:

Griffins, whether they started life that way or not, tend to find that magic does not come as strongly to them, preferring to use their claws and beak to deal damage on foes, or perhaps poison or a dagger to the back, depending on the variant of griffin. It is extremely rare to find a griffin mage, and dragons that used to be mages often find the change hard to deal with and give up on fighting.

All griffins have an innate love for hoarding (and riddles) and some have been known to take charges, even if they weren’t a guardian. Where there is a griffin, their hoard can usually be found close by, and is typically made up of gemstones, flight fancies and the like, with the exclusion of magpie variants (see Osprey/Magpie).

Dragon Differences

Even though they look completely different, most of the time you can still tell what dragon breed a griffin is, either by the way they act or the physical features they still retain.

Most fins are simply changed into crests of feathers, and occasionally the horns stay, but it is not uncommon for a griffin to have no draconian features at all.

  • Fae: 4 feather crests

PUMA / MOUNTAIN LION
Most Pumas have a great eye for art, and are amazing painters and drawers. Their lairs or dens are often covered in beautiful artwork and can take your breath away.

JAGUAR
Masters of camouflage, Jaguars can seemingly disappear into the undergrowth or scrub right in front of your eyes. As well as this, Jaguars are often quite cheerful while enjoying their personal space.

SMILODON
Although rare and far between, legends of these griffins have travelled far. The stories say they can lift twenty guardians and are immortal. Just shows you can’t believe everything you hear. Nevertheless, smilodons are incredibly strong and can take a lot of hits. The cat that these griffins are half of is extinct; It is said that the runes on their body brought these griffins to life.
  • Secondary Genes: Rosette/Stripes/Striation/Trail/Butterfly/Safari/Hex
  • Tertiary Genes: Runes/ghost
  • Secondary Colour Range: Cinnamon-Rust | Silver-Black
  • Tertiary Colour Range: Mulberry-Carmine (BIG)
Wondering how the tert works if the bird variant is a rare/uncommon variant? Simple: The tert stays runes/ghost but must be in the Bird Variant’s tertiary colour range
