it's definitely not a gene you can just toss on any dragon and have them rock it, like butterfly tends to be. but i have a few dragons i've put scales on who i think really make it work!

Galomine, my current icon, is pretty close to being an XYX. the tert and primary matching works well with scales, because it adds texture more than anything else. her scales are very subtle, but i think they were the best look for her.

this girl had okapi, but when i realized that scales plays with the accent color i got really stoked seeing the way it worked! the splash of orange spring scales gives goes super well with the little orange gems from her teardrop set, and her okapi was mostly covered up with apparel anyway.

Gulliver had underbelly before. i don't have much explination for him, just that the splashes of color scales gives vs the stripe of yellow makes him look a little cheerier, almost?
(never mind that these are all skydancers that's totally a coincidence actually, they do look a little more bird-y with scales but that was not my intent with these guys)
