They are very unusual pathogens, almost indestructible, and able to warp healthy proteins into infectious copies of themselves by mere contact, and all this they do without organelles, genetic material, or any of the characteristics associated with life. They are the agents behind some of the most devastating diseases, ones with no known cure, and fatality rates of 100%. Yet, no one really paid much attention to these tiny threats, largely due to their rarity. Until recently, when a new strain was discovered, one that altered not only the brains of its victims, but their entire body. These dragons are often very sickly. Their bodies shake uncontrollably, and they usually have difficulty walking. They rarely speak, and when they do, their speech is slurred, and often unintelligible. Cognitive changes and/or difficulties (personality changes, memory problems, etc.) are extremely common. Although they are typically non-threatening on their own, when under the control of an Enceph, they will attack and attempt to infect any dragon that comes near. The pale protein growths upon their bodies are very brittle, crumbling easily when pressure is applied to them. Ingesting the resulting fragments is the most common cause of infection. Encephs Breed: Any modern Eyes: Any Primary: Coral - Rose, Iridescent, Metallic Secondary Coral - Rose, Shimmer, Alloy Tertiary: Antique - Moon, Spines, Gembond, Keel Occasionally, when a plague dragon is infected with the prions, they are able to resist the disease, and instead of becoming a spongiform they become an Enceph When this happens, the dragon develops a protein shell and growths of the disease-causing proteins on their scales. They constantly shed these growths, and often slip them into the food and water supplies of clans. They have complete control over spongiforms and most won't pass up an opportunity to add to their armies. They are master manipulators who enjoy turning dragons against each other, and will often use this to destroy clans they cannot infect. Many of them believe they are The Plaguebringer’s chosen children, those strong enough to overcome Her trials and spread Her will. -The armoured shell of these dragons makes them very resilient to most forms of attack. -They have a rivalry with Royal Amalgamates. Encephs despise Amalgamates, as they are one of the few dragon-like beings they cannot infect. Their near immortality only further fuels this hatred. Encephs want to be the best survivors, and they will do almost anything to achieve this. For this reason, Water and Fire dragons are often favoured victims, as their elemental magics target Amalgamates only weaknesses. Failed Encephs Requirements: Similar to Encephs, but missing one/all of the required genes, or having one or more of their colours just outside of the accepted range. Sometimes, dragons are able to resist the Prions, but for some reason fail to develop into Encephs. They are still infected with the disease, and capable of spreading it, though their symptoms are typically milder than those of a Spongiform, and many live healthily for many years after infection. They may have most or none of the traits of proper Encephs, though most lack the infamous control over Spongiforms that makes their properly formed brethren so dangerous. They may or may not be immune to this control themselves. Reformed Breed: Any modern Eyes: Any Primary: Coral - Rose Wasp, Ground Secondary Coral - Rose Bee, Fissure Tertiary: Antique - Moon, Spines, Gembond, Keel, Scales While Encephs are very powerful, underneath their armoured carapaces they are little different from normal dragons. Eventually they will die, whether from old age, or trauma. Sometimes when this happens, however, they don’t stay dead. No one knows exactly what causes dead Encephs to return to life, but it is often believed to be the result of exposure to high levels of magic. These revived creatures are known as “the Reformed”, they are terrifying beings, cracked armour falling away to reveal flesh, and even bones beneath. Their only focus seems to be death and destruction, as they attack anything in sight, and will not stop until they are destroyed for good. Reformed are almost universally despised by living Encephs, who see them as abominations, though most are not above directing these mindless ghouls towards enemy clans. Rarely, a skilled necromancer is able to return these dragons to sanity. Due to the violent nature of the Reformed, this endeavor is extremely dangerous, and is thus seldom attempted. Ultimate Encephs Breed: Any modern Eyes: Any, Plague strongly preferred Primary: Antique - Moon Alloy, Shimmer Secondary: Antique - Moon Metallic, Iridescent Tertiary: Antique - Moon Gembond, Spines, Crackle, Smirch, Keel, Opal As an Enceph gets older, the malformed proteins take over more and more of their bodies. Eventually, they become these terrifying beings, all traces of their draconic lives erased. Many of them exhibit strange traits not seen in their breed, most often extra horns and spines. No one has ever found a way to kill these creatures, or if they have, they haven’t lived to share their discovery. Even if they are injured, their bodies quickly regenerate. They do not require food or water, and don’t even appear to breathe. They naturally produce a magical, stupefying aura, which they can control. At first dragons impacted by this field will become confused, lethargic, and may have trouble moving. The field eventually starts to affect vital functions, which eventually leads to coma, then death. Magic nullifying charms and spells can protect someone from this, and Encephs naturally have higher resistance. This field gives them limited control over all dragons, infected or not, though they are not capable of exerting complete control over non-Spongiforms, they are only able to influence a non-Prion’s actions. While they have lost the ability to reproduce normally, many will take normal Encephs under their wing, either as a parental figure or mentor, depending on the dragon. Though they do not require food, they are capable of consuming prion proteins and brain tissue to regenerate damaged body parts or grow larger. Thios "Thio" for one. These creatures are known as "Thios" and seem to be the sworn enemies of Encephs, and are quite determined to develop a cure for the deadly infection spread by them. They often utilize traps and ambushes when attempting to fight their armoured nemesis, as they stand little chance against them head-on. The mucous that coats their bodies has antimicrobial properties, as well as slowing the progression of prion disease, though it is not a cure. Some of these dragons seem to have developed growths mimicking those found on some infected, to better infiltrate the ranks of their enemies. A few have even begun to develop bony armoured plating, much like the Encephs protein carapaces. Thios are highly resistant to the prion infection, with those who do contract the disease having a far higher than normal chance of becoming Encephs, even non-plague Thios have been known to become Encephs. Other than their (sometimes obsessive) drive to find a cure for prions, little is known about the society or psychology of these pale dragons, and therefore separating reality from rumour is quite difficult. Whispers of forgotten deities, ancient conflicts, and magics unknown to most of dragonkind can be heard amongst both Thios and, more commonly, nosy dragons, who may or may not simply be parroting fictions recited to them by another. Whether or not there is any merit to these vague statements, Thios residing in Plague territory (and the clans housing them), often have tragedy befall them. Many have taken this as a sign of Plaguebringer’s displeasure with the breed, and others as a sign of malevolence on the part of Thios. -Many Thios attempt to befriend amalgamates, in the hopes that the nigh-immortal creatures will aid them in their fight against the Encephs. Some particularly desperate Thios will even purposefully infect themselves with the spores, so they are better able to combat the Encephs. Some of the more morally ambiguous Thios will attempt to create Sanitized Amalgamates, though these experiments rarely go as intended. Zombified Thios Breed: Any modern Primary: Gloom - Coal, Jupiter, Ripple Secondary: Gloom - Coal, Saturn, Current Tertiary: Cherry - Red(Smirch, Soap Stained, Smoke, Capsule) Antique - Orca (Scales, Gembond) All eye colours + types accepted Occasionally, undead Thios have been seen, their hides dark with decay, their once translucent secretion stained with blood. While this doesn't seem to affect its anti-prion properties all that much, it is now usually contaminated with various microbes, so it is not ideal for medical use. Now immune to prions, and resistant to physical injury, these creatures will not hesitate to fight Encephs head-on, often capturing them for their living brethren to study. It is not known exactly where these zombies come from, but they are commonly believed to be raised by Thio necromancers, so they can continue the fight even in death. Although they usually possess no magical abilities, the diseased slime coating their bodies offers them protection from most living beings, and allows enterprising Thios an easy way to grow and study pathogens. Naturally, these pathogens require sustenance, the easiest source of which is blood. Thus, most zombified Thios have adapted the habit of coating themselves in the blood of animals (and occasionally dragons). Most living Thios are not bothered by their clanmates decayed flesh or bloodbathing, as behind the terrifying visage remains the sentient mind of a friend or family member. The rest of Sornieth is less tolerant of these creatures, especially denizens of the Plague flight. Perhaps this is for good reason, as even in death these reanimated corpses seem to exist beneath the same black cloud of tragedy that haunted them in life. Plague Thio clans that harbour many of their zombified kin often seem to encounter misfortune on a daily basis. However, even this seemingly inescapable curse isn’t enough to keep most Thios, undead or not, out of the Plaguebringer’s realm. They dedicated their lives to their cause, and it seems they now have dedicated their afterlives to it as well. Awesome subspecies! I don't know if you have a pinglist, but please add me to it if you can. I love the look and the lore behind them!

This seems like a really interesting subspecies! Prions have fascinated me for a while now. I especially dig your spongiform design. Could I be added to the sales ping please?
