It was said that long ago, deep in the recesses of the Fortress of Ends and far from prying eyes, the ice god was experimenting. The dead could be frozen away indefinitely - preserved and catalogued - but what if they could be revived? The Plaguebringer took notice of his experimentation, alerted by a young dragon who had explored the ice caves too deeply. She was repulsed by the notion of reanimating the dead - it simply went against the natural order of things. She sent messengers - a pack of strong, swift mirrors - to order him to stop. The Icewarden refused her demands and returned her messengers, but they had been frozen and revived, their proud red eyes replaced by blank whiteness. With them, he sent a small army of tundras he had resurrected from the ice - perhaps as a show of force, or perhaps he simply wanted to show off his new project. Enraged, the Plaguebringer cast the undead into the Wyrmwound. If the Icewarden sent unnatural forces against her, she would respond in kind - relying on nature, not magic, to produce her warriors. When the dragons emerged, they were neither mirror nor tundra - lithe, powerful hunters with slick coats and powerful fangs, ready to fight to serve their goddess. As this new army amassed at his borders, the Icewarden withdrew back into his Fortress, agreeing to let the dead stay dead and to let nature take its course.[/columns] ----------- [b][size=4]Social[/size][/b] [size=2]Of course, this is merely legend. Less spiritual dragons theorize that Lycaons were simply a group of tundras that migrated to the Scarred Wasteland, adapted to a more predatory lifestyle to make up for the lack of edible plant growth, and possibly interbred with mirror packs along the way. Today, Lycaons live primarily in the Scarred Wasteland, Dragonhome, and the Viridian Labyrinth, although small family clans can be found throughout Sornieth. Although they resemble tundras, these dragons are mainly predatory, and work together in small groups to take down larger prey. They can be identified by their carnivorous dentition and relatively short fur - Lycaons are adapted to warm climates and have bristly fur that often thins with age. As grassland hunters, they have evolved patchy brown coloration to blend in with their surroundings and better surprise prey. Patterns vary between individuals, and it is said that no two Lycaons have exactly the same markings. Like their tundra ancestors, Lycaons have extremely strong social bonds. Solitary living and hunting is very rare, and as seen as a sign of failure - an individual that has been living without a clan for an extended period of time is unlikely to be accepted into another. Lycaons typically live in close-knight family groups of 3-10, although aggregations of hundreds of individuals occur in response to the great annual migration of Zeeba across the wastelands. These gatherings are a time of great celebration, and are a chance to see members of extended family as well as a chance to reaffirm inter-clan bonds. Lycaon clans are more familial than hierarchical, and are led by a single breeding pair, usually the oldest and most experienced in the group. Any major decisions are made democratically, and the youngest members of the clan are allowed to eat first at kills. Hello - you all said you'd like a ping when I got my African Wild Dog subspecies up! I've loosened up the color/gene requirements a bit just so more people can participate, but I'll still be breeding primarily py/morph hatchlings.
