A E R I E
prelude

The empress Rhaen is dead, may Heaven guard her soul.

No one knows how it came to be. The empress’s advisors have been tight-lipped about the circumstances of her death. Wild rumors whirl through the streets, growing in extravagance with every retelling.

Setup
The Earth’s Breath

Players may have one of two alignments:

11x Imperial Loyalists, who win when all members of the Cabal of Whispers are dead.
4x Cabal of Whispers, who win when they compose a majority of living players.

The Cabal of Whispers will compose roughly 25-30% of players, with specific ratio to be determined when signups close.

Each player also has a color, randomized separately from their alignment. There are an equal number of each color, and all players have a color:

4x Azure
4x Crimson
4x Saffron
3x Sable

Role flavor was written before assigning alignments or colors, and is not indicative of anything.

A Sword of Many Hues

All players have the same set of abilities: Ward and Curse. Warding is a protection, and Cursing is an attack. To use these abilities, players must form groups. Groups must consist of players of at least two colors, meaning that the minimum number of players to form a group is two. (Actions undertaken by groups with only one color represented will automatically fail.) No group can target one of its own members.

The strongest attack and protection on each player are tested against each other. The group with the most colors wins; if both have the same number of colors, the largest group wins. If both groups have the same number of colors and members, the attack wins.

Any player who is part of a group action may also chose to Sabotage that action, causing it to fail. Groups are not informed of whether or not their action was successful; all failures (due to lack of color representation or Sabotage) are silent. Individual players who failed to join a group will be informed.

To participate in a group action, players must either designate a player to follow or submit an action as well as a set of players that they wish to lead. At the end of the night, you receive feedback on exactly what occurred:

For followers
  • You followed [LEADER], who attempted to [Ward/Curse] [TARGET]. The members of this group were as follows: [...]
  • You tried to follow [LEADER], but failed. [Occurs if LEADER did not submit an action, followed another player, or did not permit you to join them.]

For leaders
  • You led a group in an attempt to [Ward/Curse] [TARGET]. The members of this group were as follows: [...]
  • You tried to lead a group in an attempt to [Ward/Curse] [TARGET], but failed to gain the support of any followers.

The Color That Time Forgot

The mafia possess a factional ability called Glass, which may be collectively invoked once per night by the mafia in order to make a one-person attack on a player. When making an attack with Glass, the mafia must declare a color; the attack succeeds only if that color is the target’s color. As a part of this ability, Glass also returns investigative results as match/not a match.

Each time a member of the mafia dies, Glass gains strength. At the beginning of the game, it counts as a one-member kill, but for each mafia player who dies, it gains a member.

The first time Glass kills a player of each color, it also gains strength. At the beginning of the game, it counts as a one-color kill, but for each unique color that is killed with Glass, it gains a color. Once Glass is fully empowered, it is a five-color kill and thus cannot be blocked by any means.

The mafia do not possess a normal factional kill.

  • As moderator of this game, I have the final say. Please respect my judgement.
  • If you don’t understand something, whether that be a rule, a mechanic, or your role, never hesitate to ask, especially when it comes to rules. Better to ask permission than to get modkilled!

Conduct
  • Play to win. Gamethrowing is not appreciated.
  • Play with respect. Realize that there are people on the other side of the screen.
  • Be civil. It's okay to be aggressive, but personal attacks (ie, “You’re stupid!”) are not okay. (Note that this is distinct from “That’s stupid!”, which is okay.) Neither you nor I will be happy if you get banned from FR.

  • The same goes for anything I inform you of privately, including night results, answers to questions, and so on.
  • If you need someone to talk to, my inbox is always open. I know it’s nice to rant sometimes. You may also rant to dead players or spectators so long as you make it clear that they should not respond.

  • You may communicate with other players in this game outside the game thread. See the Private Communications section below for details.

Private Communications
  • Unlike most games, you are permitted to communicate with other players outside the game thread. This doesn’t mean you can do so indiscriminately.
  • All game rules also apply to private communications. I understand that private communications are intrinsically different from public discussion, and will enforce rules with that in mind, but you are still expected to remain within the bounds of good taste.

Activity and Deadlines
  • Lurkers are not cool.
  • Failure to make a vote or post each day phase, or to submit a night action, will net you a prod. (Abstentions from voting or action are sufficient.) 24 hours after I send you a prod, I will begin searching for a replacement; if you return before I find one, you may remain, but any further prods will cause you to be replaced immediately.

Enforcement
  • I will typically warn you first if you are in danger of infracting or if you have committed a minor offense.
  • I will force-replace you if you continue to break rules or if your integrity has become compromised (eg, someone PMs you the identity of the mafia).
  • I will only modkill if your slot’s integrity has become compromised.
  • If you are force-replaced or modkilled, so long as you are not at fault, you will still win with your faction.

Lynching
  • You may vote in the lynch thread, which is here. So long as I can tell who you’re referring to, your vote is good. Please strike out your previous vote when you make a new vote, but use a new post for each vote.
  • Votes are locked in once the deadline hits, but you may continue to post until I “lock” the thread (alas, I cannot actually lock the thread).
  • The person with the most votes at deadline is lynched. There is no minimum to lynch.
  • If there's a tie between two people, there is no lynch. (A tie between no lynch and a player does not result in a lynch.)

They strike without warning. One moment, the crown princess is walking through the imperial gardens, her hair almost luminous in the full desert sun. Then one of her attendants cries out and falls to her knees. Moments later, the girl is dead, her face pale and lifeless.

All around her, the flowers have gone white.

The princess’s guards rush to her side, but it’s too late. The attackers have already vanished into the palace’s labyrinthine corridors, no doubt to regroup for another attempt on the princess’s life.

Stanari, who was Princess’s Handmaiden, of Sable, has died Night Zero.

The news spreads like wildfire. The power of Glass is forbidden to all but for the imperial line, and for good reason. It hungers for chroma; denied, it turns against its wielder. If these would-be usurpers are using Glass, they are a danger to the entire court.
