This is a chance for lore writers of all stripes to get together a few days each month to roll out some lore and groan together at how difficult it can be sometimes. Whether you write ten words or a thousand on these days, that's more than you had before - and you should be proud of that progress! So, to bring us together and give us that extra push of motivation that comes with knowing we are not alone, every day with a date ending in 4 (the 4th, 14th, and 24th of every month) is declared a Flight Rising Lore Whining Day! A day that all of us who have a landslide of writing to do can agree to buckle down and work on our profiles, bios, lore, and any other FR-related writing we have waiting to be hammered out if only we could convince ourselves to sit still and do it - and also so we can complain together about how DANG HARD IT IS. Think of this as a chance to sit at a desk in a comfy, friendly room full of people who are all working on their own projects. Everyone typing furiously at their keyboards or scribbling in their notebooks, sharing solidarity and company just by being there together for the same goal. Nobody in the room thinks internet dragons are a weird thing to spend your time working on - in fact, that's why all of us are here! Keep in mind that your dragons and your lore are, above all else, for you. If someone does want to read your stuff, then of course that's a great bonus! But don't let worries about what other people want to read and whether anyone else will like it or not sidetrack you from getting it down no matter what. Let these days be a time of freedom and creativity for yourself. Write your dragons and your stories into what YOU want them to be, and be proud of yourself for making something you love![/color][/size][/columns] [emoji=scroll size=1] [b]Why bother having special days set aside for FR writing?[/b] [columns][color=transparent]......[/color][nextcol][color=black][size=4]Having regularly scheduled, pre-planned days to work on things instead of just saying "I'll get to it sometime" can help us quit procrastinating, and knowing that dozens of other people are doing the same thing at the same time is encouraging and can help keep us from giving up. It's especially helpful for those of us who feel silly for writing about dragon pixels on the internet. Even if it is a weird hobby, at least we're not alone. Sometimes all you really need to push you to keep going is company on the journey, and you can find that here![/color][/size][/columns] [emoji=scroll size=1] [b]How do I participate in Lore Whining Days?[/b] [columns][color=transparent]......[/color][nextcol][color=black][size=4]The only thing you [i]have[/i] to do is work on writing for your dragons on any date ending in 4, it's as easy as that! How you define "work" is also entirely up to you - if you feel like writing a full-blown story, go for it! If you don't feel very inspired or just want a nice easy day, jotting down a few bullet-point notes is also just as fine. There's no hard rules! If you feel social and want to make forum posts or tumblr posts about how you're doing - or to vent about how much you hate everything - then that's great! Posts on the thread are especially welcomed, whether it's to report a goal, report your progress, chat with other writers, or all of the above! If you're not in a social mood, though, you can still bask in knowing you're part of the community just by working extra hard on the same day as everyone else.[/color][/size][/columns] [emoji=scroll size=1] [b]Why do the reminder pings go out the night [i]before[/i] each LWD?[/b] [columns][color=transparent]......[/color][nextcol][color=black][size=4]For thread purposes, we run on FR server time, so sending out pings an hour or two before rollover lets people have the "maximum" opportunity to participate. Of course, we have participants from all sorts of timezones and folks are free to run on FR time or their own, so sending out earlier pings also just gives an earlier reminder that "Hey, there's a thing going on soon!" If you'd like to be pinged in the reminder post every 3rd/13th/23rd, let me know and I'll add your name to the list![/color][/size][/columns] [emoji=scroll size=1] [b]What's up with this Spotlight thing?[/b] [columns][color=transparent]......[/color][nextcol][color=black][size=4]The LWD Spotlight is just a casual lil' way to acknowledge that hey, writing is hard sometimes and the people keeping at it are pretty cool! Occasionally on the day after a LWD, a participant who posted in either this thread or the Discord will be picked for their efforts - whether that's writing lore yourself, helping with someone else's, and more! Participants are chosen based mostly on whatever I'm vibing with and potentially with a dash of RNG if I'm tied between a few folks, with a bigger emphasis on folks who have yet to be picked. (It's not a contest for who writes the most/best/etc!) Spotlights have their own mini pinglist separate from general LWD posts and announcements. Note that anything here is 100% optional. If you don't think they'll help (or if they might stress you out), then don't force it! But if you think they'll give you a boost, by all means give it your best go and see what happens! [LIST] [*]Write to make [i]yourself[/i] happy. It might sound weird, but try not to care if anyone else will ever read or even look at your bios. Write what [i]you[/i] want, to make yourself proud of your collection of dragons. Anything that comes after that is extra frosting on the cake! [br] [*]Don't try to get [i]everything[/i] done one day! Instead, try to set a reasonable goal for yourself - even if it seems small. All progress is good progress here! If you're just working 'to get a bunch done' it's easy to end up feeling overwhelmed and defeated, because odds are you have way too many dragons to finish in just one day. Pick a challenge of a decent size, something like "today I will write the first drafts for two profiles," or "today I will work for at least 30 minutes without getting distracted." [br] [*]If you're feeling uninspired, take a wander through another player's lair! Sometimes seeing the different themes and execution of ideas - or even just the apparel layering - can give you a new perspective for your own lore and help you break out of frequently-used tropes. (And maybe leave you with a dozen more breeding project goals, but is that really a bad thing?) [br] [*]Word count got you down? Try a writing sprint! Set a time limit - usually around 15 to 20 minutes - and try to write as fast as you can. Don't worry about writing "badly," either - because as long as you're writing [i]at all[/i], that gives you something solid to poke into shape later on! Sprints can be done alone, but the competition, camaraderie, and last-minute panic of joining in with others can be a more effective boost! [br] [*]Maybe you want to write but you're just not sure [i]what[/i]. When that happens, pull up a prompt generator! Even ones not related to FR can spark ideas and "what-ifs." Take a crack at one, play around with it long enough, and you might just find that you've figured out what to write after all! And even if you don't, hang on to what you wrote anyway. Recycling can be very useful, and you never know when old material will come in handy! [br] [*]Consider announcing your goal publicly! There's a lot of power in knowing what you hope to accomplish instead of just staring up at a massive workload, and that power doubles when you put your goal in writing. Holding yourself accountable by making something to say "I'm going to do some work today!" is helpful for a lot of people, and it lets others know there's one more friendly face in the crowd! Carve out a piece that's the right size for you and consider slapping it into a post for sharing your aim for the day. [br] [*]Make another check-in post at the end of the day to share how you did for accountability's sake - or to celebrate! Knowing that you're going to sum up your results once the day is over might help motivate you to actually Get The Thing Done instead of shrugging and quitting early. [br] [*]If you want to vent about how hard it is, then go right ahead! These are named lore [i]whining[/i] days, not lore pretending-this-is-easy days, for a reason. If venting about how you're banging your head against the desk makes you feel better, go ahead and do it! [br] [*]Sometimes a day just isn't working out, and when that happens, it's also healthy to take a break. Get up, stretch, drink some water, maybe pick up a book for a bit! Higher-focus activities can help shift your mind off lore for a while so you're more refreshed when you come back to it, while lower-focus activities may let new ideas pop up with less effort. [br] [*]If you feel social or brave enough, consider helping out any struggling fellow writers you see who might be posting questions or venting about how frustrated they are. A friendly ping with a "you can do it" sort of push can go a long way! [br] [*]Be proud of yourself for trying even if you fall short of your goal! Writing is hard, okay? Even if you just glared at a notepad file or a piece of paper, at least you [i]tried[/i], and [i]trying[/i] eventually leads to [i]doing[/i] - if you don't beat yourself up for failure and crush your own spirit. Remember that this is a 100% shame free zone. Beating yourself up is not good for your creativity or your heart, so shake that shame garbage off and just get ready to try again next Lore Whining Day!
