Hey guys! I've been on the fence about pulling my long complicated mess of lore out of FR as an original work and redoing my entire lair for more space. But I don't want to do anything I would regret if it turns out that I don't actually want to get rid over half of my lair. If I do purge it would be to a size of somewhere around 20 or less dergs only keeping the first maybe ten dergs from my lair (I've got seven in mind right now)

So I guess I just want some unbiased (and some biased @Kattata @Gedhyr @Pixieknight3264) opinions on the pros and cons of doing a purge on a lair with lore and art and such. I'm huge into DOM/exalting as well so most of my current lair is fodder and boarding for others. I have 39 permadergs right now.

So um, help? Plz?

pros:
- money
- lair space
- you actually have food?? omg

cons:
- you feel empty

I've done quite a few purges in my day! :D I would recommend it.

pros:
- more lair space
- you feel really refreshed
- can spoil the fewer dragons you have (with apparel, skins, art!)

cons:
- you have a harder time holding onto new dragons and getting attached, in my experience.

I guess we'll start with the pros.

Pros:
-Completely awesome original work
-More lair space
-New pretty dergs you can give stories to
-Probably won't need as many insects
-Create new original lore

Cons:
-You have to start completely over with lore
-Another story to add to your "In-Progress" pile
-Loss of dergs you've grown attached to
-Emptier lair

A couple other things to think about:
-What are you gonna do about art? Keep it for your original story? Get rid of it?
-FR lore - have you thought of a way to change your lore so it doesn't plagiarize FR lore?

I think the above has the pro/con lists covered so I'll just say that in all the lair purges I've done I've only ever regretted purging a single dragon (my random progenitor, who I did eventually get back anyway). Lair expansions get too expensive to keep huge sections of lair space blocked off permanently, so I've always found purges rewarding.

Although, I don't think there's any need to preemptively pull your own creative input off of dragon bios before using it in an original work? They're still your characters, and if you did publish your original story later I don't think anyone would dig through a pet site to pull receipts on you. I wouldn't worry about it unless your name is Cassandra Clare, but she's doing pretty well as far as I can tell, so really...???

I would say that if you want to do a lair purge, consider what direction you want to go. Do you just want more pretty babies? Do you want new lore? Or do you just want a change?

You could keep images of your exalted dragons in a 'record keeper' dragon's bio, along with their lore. That way you can keep your story and just pretend the exalted characters left the clan for whatever lore reason.

I've sold/exalted lore+art dragons before, but I keep a copy of the bios and art on my PC :3

Dragons with art sell pretty fast, too (I don't bother with posting on the forums if it's just lore and sell them as fodder).

The only reason I regret trying to keep my permas to ~1 page is that awakening familiars takes forever.
