TOPIC | Buying Gems, Worth It?
1 2
I noticed FR has premium currency and I was wondering if it's worth buying them?

I just joined and it seems pretty difficult to really get started, so would cheaping out and buying myself a bunch of gems for a headstart be a decent investment or are they not really all that useful.

I used to spend a little money on Neopets cash so I know about premium currency and all that, so I'm just wondering if getting the gems will help me out in getting set up and stuff.

Once you get going, Gems aren't that hard to come by. Plus you can play just fine without them. However, if you want nice stuff right away or else you'll quit, then maybe it's worth it.

@estoc if you want some extra money to spend and have spare cash, go for it. However, I don't think theyd really help in "setting up", after all, buying gems won't tell you how to do things on site- they'll just make you able to buy some things in the marketplace, forums, or auction house since it's basically premium treasure- there aren't many things gems can buy that treasure can't buy.
But do remember that you can get gems without buying them-
From chests
Selling things for gems
(Occasionally) exalting dragons
Providing services like art or writing
One daily from well fed bonus

@HalfMoonTheWolf

Right now I feel like I'm just leeching off the older players for items and dragons and such, so it'd be nice to have my own footing...if gems'd help anyway. Do they just work the same as treasure or are they restricted in what you can do with them?

I'm not about to drop $100 on a site I'm brand new to, though. Just got my eye on those $10-$20 packs at the moment.

@Shinyumbreon

Ohh so you can get them through regular gameplay then? :0 That's useful...
I was looking at the art threads before though, I think I might give that a shot eventually!
Thank you!

If you only started out I would not buy any. Besides the fact that the payout is way too low in my oppinion - 5$ of gems are worth nothing you'll likely have to spend 20$ up if you want to buy anything of interest - it might do well for you to a) wait and see if this is your game and you truly want to stick around for a longer time and b) on if you actually need to buy them. Most things you can easily buy in treasure which is easy to get and costs nothing but a bit of time playing (which you'll do anyway since that is what you came here to do).

@Estoc Saying you are a newbie, I think buying some gems could be very beneficial! For example, you could buy a Level 25 which has a rally and Eliminate(be careful with AH listings, dragon sales may be safer). You could also buy the stone seperate(though elim is VERY costly). Then use said dragon in the mire to train dragons to level 6-7 and exalting them for about 9-10kt, so about a 2-4k profit. Ahhh, gotcha. You can use Gems to buy stuff in the Gem sections of the Marketplace or buy new Apparel Slots for you dragons. A lot of players list things for Gems in the Auction House as well. You can go to the Items For Sale Forums and exchange Treasure for Gems (and vice versa).

I manage fine with both currency, though most of what I buy/sell in in Treasure.

Okay going off what everyone's said, I think I'm gonna give it a few days and then see if I want to invest in the level 25 dragons like @/TemmieVillage suggested.

Thank you, everyone!

unless you're in gen 1 hell like i am, you don't need it thaaaat much
If you want to do it, go ahead!
it's your choice!
edit:I would definitely recommend investing in one.
as a noob, I won 2 level 25s, and I'm not sure if I would still be playing the game if it weren't for those 2 as they provided me with an easy way to farm in the coli and make money

@Estoc
yup, get yourself a lvl 25 with the build introduced. You're going to miss it as Flameforger's getting closer. You can make really good cash grinding coli.

Then you may look for the type of the dragons you like
