I'm getting a bit discouraged in that none of the bosses drop for me in numerous venues. I keep reading about people who are getting these familiars but I have had not even one of them drop.

I'm getting a bit discouraged in that none of the bosses drop for me in numerous venues. I keep reading about people who are getting these familiars but I have had not even one of them drop.
They seem to pop up when you're reeeaally busy grinding or when you're wistfully wishing for one but not really expecting them to. I went grinding in the Blooming Gardens a few days ago and not long into the fight one of the Podhips appeared. I was thinking 'Gee, wish I had that familiar'.
and my wish came true o_O
Then again, it's really just probability; sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. I seem to get one boss familiar from each venue I grind often, but its color counterpart never drops.

I only ever had one drop in my entire time here on FR, and that was this fella here:

COMPLETELY unexpected drop! I wasn't even looking for it, but sure enough it just kinda surprised me. I already got it to Loyal since this was ages ago. I guess it'll come when ya least expect it! The harder you try for it, the more it'll avoid ya to be a pain XP

The only bosses I get to drop on a frequent basis are the Spirit bosses from Ghostlight Ruins. Of course I also practically live in that venue so...
(And by "frequent" I mean maybe once every month or two. It seems like when I managed to sell or trade one Spirit, I get another one back as a new drop lol.)
The best advice I can give for boss hunting is to aim for a different or concurrent goal than just getting a boss familiar to drop, one that will keep you in a single venue for a lengthy period of time. It could be coli-exclusive apparel, mats for Swipp or Baldwin, missing familiars from your bestiary, or maybe you like to hoard particular items. It makes not having a boss drop less disappointing if you're at least making progress on another goal.
Festivals can be a great chance to go boss hunting if the top three venues for currency grinding also happen to be venues with bosses. I got both of the Rocs from Harpy's Roost to drop when I was grinding for currency and chests during TCC, and one of the Boars from Arena dropped for me during Brightshine.

First time I got into the Redrock Cove, I ended up encountering five Deeprealm Hunters that night, almost consecutively, a single Spiney Whale tossed in for flavor. It was crazy. I went back the next morning and got the familiar. Bosses, man.

In about 40 hours of coli grinding, I managed to get 2 of these bad boys:

But I'd say just buy the bosses if you don't have a ridiculous amount of free time, since it takes FOREVER. These were my first 2 bosses by the way, and I spend probably 10 hours in the mire every week. I guess you just have to be pretty lucky to get them.

Yes. I can't tell you how many tunnel hydras the volcanic vents have thrown at me, but I've yet to see a scale of the other one in a drop >.>
But yeah, I went years before I got my first boss drop, and then I think it was during a festival. I was pretty convinced I'd never get one. Hang in there! They'll come home with you when you least expect it!
