TOPIC | Flight switches + lore?

So, I'm planning to move from Nature to Arcane tomorrow! Just in time for the festival because why not. However, I'm wondering how I want to fit this into my lore. I want to move, but I like my current lair and territory. For those who have switched flights, how did that work out in your lore? Did you abandon your old lairs? Did you retcon your lore? Why did your dragons move in the first place? I want to hear your stories. I'll just ramble about my options here, don't mind me. Here's a simple diagram of my current lair... we have: - a big chunk of the pink crystal from Starfall Isles, crash landed in the forest long ago - dragons living inside the rock and in huts on top/nearby - surrounding jungle affected by magical radiation, full of odd mutated wildlife - probably a lake somewhere, not pictured There are a few ways my clan could move to Starfall Isles. Method 1: Lift up the rock (and its little shard buddy) and float it over there. This is probably easy enough, and we could easily place the rock anywhere. We could float it around the Observatory, or anchor it to the trees in Starwood Strand. However, I like our patch of jungle and the mutated wildlife, and I wouldn't like to leave it behind. I'm also not sure the entire clan could happily live inside the rock only. We probably need some land too. Method 2: Lift up the rock and a large chunk of the forest too, have a big floating island This is cool but possibly quite damaging to the Labyrinth. Gladekeeper might get mad. EDIT: I have realised that the unsightly crater would actually end up as a nice pond thanks to the natural spring underneath the rock, and that Gladekeeper would actually be quite pleased that our hazardous radioactive rock and its mutated wildlife are being neatly cut out of the forest. This option is not as bad as I thought, main issue is 'where do you even get that much magical power to move all that dirt and rock?' Method 3: Capture as much wildlife as possible, bring it + the rock to a new island (floating or otherwise), create a weird nature preserve. I like this idea, honestly! I think this would be interesting for lore. The only question is where exactly the island would be - combining with method 2 seems a good plan! Method 4: Move to Arcane, but just don't bother moving in lore. I mean, I could. We could just be an Arcane clan living in Nature. Since we live in a rock full of powerful Arcane magic, it'd make sense for our nests to produce Arcane eggs even if we're surrounded by Nature. Method 5: Retcon all the lore and claim we were always Arcane. ... Nah.

I'll just ramble about my options here, don't mind me.

Here's a simple diagram of my current lair... we have:

- dragons living inside the rock and in huts on top/nearby
- surrounding jungle affected by magical radiation, full of odd mutated wildlife

There are a few ways my clan could move to Starfall Isles.

Method 1:
Lift up the rock (and its little shard buddy) and float it over there.

Method 2:
Lift up the rock and a large chunk of the forest too, have a big floating island

This is cool but possibly quite damaging to the Labyrinth.

I like this idea, honestly! I think this would be interesting for lore. The only question is where exactly the island would be - combining with method 2 seems a good plan!

Method 4:
Move to Arcane, but just don't bother moving in lore.

I mean, I could. We could just be an Arcane clan living in Nature. Since we live in a rock full of powerful Arcane magic, it'd make sense for our nests to produce Arcane eggs even if we're surrounded by Nature.

Method 5:
Retcon all the lore and claim we were always Arcane.

Nah.
I vote option 3 or 4! As for my own, I recently decided my clan is nomadic and I'm planning a round-the-world trip!!

first of all, i would like to say i really like your idea, like with the forest being mutated by the magic of the shard, how some dragons live there and etc. Now for traveling clans they might just need to move? I never moved out of Fire (to cosy to move out of my flight) but i did read a lot of lore about moving clans; sometimes because a new leader takes over, sometimes because the interest of the clan shifted and need a new place where they can be fulfilled...

Now on moving a clan on your option
Method 1 seems the most doable, since is not that much mass they have to lift and because even in the same way that you now have land-territory, you can have land territory on Arcane besides the shiny pink crystal where the dragons can live if they dont want to stay on the crystal. Method 2 is...most difficult? It would requiere a lot more magic and then you will have 2 energies clashing against each other (Nature/Arcane) and introducing not-native species in a new habitad is...dangerous for both species. Of course that depends on your clan view on enviroment, magic capabilities and so.

Method 3 is also a good solution, but even without the magic energies colliding, you have the trouble of invading species...maybe they took the species that were affected by the magic (mutation) so they dont roam to far away on nature territory and get killed because of said mutation? That could work, specially if they use a island where they can isolate the creatures from the rest of the Arcane`s wildlife

..i think i went overboard with this ^^U sorry

I am not a creature that was born.
I am a fire that was set

I vote 3! Your clan could also bring a few native plants to house and feed the creatures. That could be really cool for lore, you're right!

@KairinRose
A nomadic clan honestly sounds like a lot of fun!! If I didn't have a home I was attached to (and had money for multiple flight changes lol) I'd probably do something like that. The feeling of freedom must be nice.

@Hinumi
Thanks for your input! I agree that with option 2 or 3 I'd have to be careful to keep our little ecosystem contained. With method 2, the chunk of forest would remain as a floating island, and with method 3 I'd be sure to set up the preserve in a similarly isolated place (ie. not right in the middle of Starwood Strand). Islands are handy for that!

Method 2 does seem like a bit too much landmass to be moving, I agree. Cutting it neatly out of the surrounding dirt seems unlikely too.
The Nature/Arcane clash isn't too much of an issue, however... our patch of forest has already been warped by the rock's Arcane magic, so wouldn't be harmed any more by a move to Arcane.

@DragonWarrior333
Yes! The idea would be to gather as much of the ecosystem as possible to transport to the new area. It might sound difficult collecting and moving so many species, but who better to do it than a Nature clan?

I love idea 3, especially combined with living on a floating island.

Haha, I like idea 2. Just Dalaran it. When you just up and move. Even a bit of the scenic Starwood Strand in the background!

That's an excellent visual right there, haha. Where's that from?

I feel like a similar looking dome forcefield thing could keep the ecosystem safely contained in our new home too. Like a magical version of those giant dome-shaped greenhouses.

I've moved twice now. They started out in Arcane and living in the Crystalspine Reaches in the floating cave. Then their cave crashed into the Starwood Strand and much of the clan was separated (I wanted to start over an purged my lair). Rather than rebuild there, partly because it now held bad memories and partly because they're a wandering clan, they moved to the Southern Icefield. There, they were overthrown by a clan that allied with the beastclans and most of the dragons in the clan were thrown out (another lair purge) and the progens were help prison because I couldn't ever get rid of them. After they regained control, my progen was too weak from being imprisoned in the cold, so they had to move to a more arid territory. And now they live comfortably in Dragonhome.

I plan on moving again and all my flight changes will be a part of my lore. I like keeping track of where they've been and I really couldn't imagine starting their lore over when I move because my progens have been there since the beginning and each flight is part of their history.

But for your options, I really like 2 or 3. Floating islands are awesome but a nature reserve could be so interesting.

World of Warcraft, Dalaran the city with a pile of mages, when the Lich King decided to start swarming the world with undead, thought 'Hey, you know what? How about we just TELEPORT OUR CITY RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR!' to stand as a point where the heroes of the Horde and Alliance could just head out from to kick some undead tail in(and sometimes beat the heck out of each other because fighting a two sided war is a great idea right?).

The Wrath of the Lich King Cinematic is totally relevant, okay no it isn't, but its still cool and has a giant dracolich.

I like the idea of a floating chunk of the Labyrinth, and Gladekeeper would probably get over it(I mean, no longer having that mutating wildlife and radiation thing happening) ... I mean maybe the area could become a nice lake.
