I was looking at FR fanart and came across this long rant on Deviantart that touches on a few things, but mainly focuses on how the most efficient ways of earning treasure are not very rewarding and quickly get stale. Initially, I was put off by how disdainful it was, but skimming through what stuck out for me most was that this was written in 2013 and the situation hasn't changed. I love FR and still come back every day since I joined in April, but it's been dawning on me that the fairground grinding is no longer fun and probably isn't something I'd do at all if I didn't have so much free time. I also find that dom battles are difficult to take part in with payout being so low and lair expansion prices so high. Needless to say, I'm beginning to feel discouraged that very little has been done about this since FR's inception. I think the honeymoon phase has worn off.

Anyway, I decided to post this in Discussion since I don't have any suggestions myself and the ones I've come across were quickly shot down.

Sales Tab < Lots of dragons 5 years and older. Prices aren't fixed!
I am bored
I'm only here for pretty dragons and art sometimes
I like to check out the new genes and I won't leave because Im too attached to my babies but money is an issue. Coli grinding can only be so fun, even with the new areas (which I applause and love everyone who makes flightrising happen!). I haven't done fairgrounds since a few months after I joined. I get working towards a goal is fun, like the expensive lair expansion, however I can't make money now. Especially when they stock new items in the MP with like 300 of the one item. That's what gets me, I can't snip if there is no snipping to do with 300 items.
Right now there is 311 Solar Flame Headpiece stocked in the MP ?????? wHy ?????? We need supply and demand and theres too much supply and not enough demand that everything is becoming worthless.
That got a little off topic whoops

I joined the day before you and haven't found making money a problem, the user who wrote it seems to not realise how beneficial the coli is.

It does have some good points in there about being tedious though, I agree it's getting stale to do familiars, fairgrounds them grind coli every day.

Players have basically dug their own hole with dragon prices since many users admit on other sites to running multiple accounts in each of the flights. If everyone was limited to their 5 nests instead of a lot of users breeding with 30+ nests a week on multis then there wouldn't be so many dragons in the system.

Even the coli is getting harder to earn cash in since botters seem to dominate the food market and the festival currency market.

Flight Rising: Where people spend thousands of gems to make dragons look pretty and then cover it all up with clothes and skins.
2013 FR is a completely different animal. 2013 FR brings back memories of endless lag, days of downtime, and the gem ratio being a whopping 1:80 because treasure was almost literally impossible to earn. The Fairgrounds games didn't work half the time and there were a grand total of two of them. Basically, if you weren't a KS backer with a head start and Imperial hatchlings to sell for ridiculous prices, you were going to have a rough, rough time. It feels like a whole different game these days, honestly, and it's way more fun when you're not waiting for the site to come back up so you can put down your reserve 150k payment on a triple-basic Pearlcatcher that won't even hatch for another week. There were a lot of people who ragequit back then. I can't really say that I blame them, and tbh I probably only stuck with it because I was already accustomed to being poor on petsites.

Now it's easier than ever to earn treasure and that's reflected in the gem exchange rate. Dragon prices are low, but that's how the dragon economy was intended to eventually turn out. It just makes it that much easier to obtain your dream dragon :u Lair expansion costs get very high, yes, but they're there as a treasure sink as well as a soft cap; everyone is already overrun with dragons as it is. They need to be restricted somehow. Would it be better to control the population by making dragons unable to breed after some point, or just straight up die like some pet sims? (also, exalting is not sending them to 'dragon heaven'. exalting does not equal death.)

Yes, I do think that FR still relies a little too heavily on grindy things like Coliseum, which I personally can't stand, and I wish they'd branch out with more features and activities. But the economy isn't broken or anything and there are plenty of ways to earn treasure that don't involve Fairgrounds or bonding with familiars all day long. Features like Baldwin and Tomo's Trivia didn't exist when that rant was written. Heck, we had about half the features we do now.

@AnnieGYG Multiaccounters and cheaters are a problem for the site in general, but they're not the reason for dragon overpopulation. That was already going to happen anyway. The dragon population grows exponentially and since dragons never die or lose the ability to breed, welp. Back in the day the admins straight-up told us "dragon mills will be a thing someday" and it sounded crazy at the time when nobody had any dragons to spare, but that's how FR was eventually designed to work: with everybody up to their eyeballs in cheap hatchlings.

I forgot the fairgrounds even existed. It's a lot easier to earn treasure now and most people don't buy hatchlings and immediately exalt them nowadays. Most wait for them to grow up, then train them and exalt. You earn more this way instead of a paltry 2kt. With tons of people grinding the coli familiars can be obtained for much cheaper than at the marketplace, and coli drops can be hoardsold to make some profit if they don't sell at the AH. 2013 was really, really different.

I don't know. Reading the economy is part of the fun for me. I've been running a hatchery for a while and selling my lore through this. I make anywhere from 10-200kt per week but I also learn how to put my money back into making more money. I buy new pairs because ones I have will lose value quick. It's all about being smart about reading the market. I also hoard almost everything, then if I need emergency money I drag out a skin from years ago and sell that for high payout. But if you're not on a lot it's hard to think in the long term. I usually spent probably a few hours total but in small 5min intervals on here, bumping my hatchery and going through other users looking for dragons.

There are multiple things wrong with the FR economy, but the ease at which people are able to earn treasure isn't one of them. I do remember oldies talking about how difficult the site was in general back in the early days, so that's likely part of what this person is talking about, but these days people are rolling around in millions of treasure. I for one don't have a properly-statted Coli team and don't grind for more than an hour or two every few days, don't participate in Dom battles, and I can still manage to save up about 500kT per month. If I can do that with the little effort I put in, making it any easier to earn treasure would hyper-inflate the economy a la Gaia Online. Some inflation is healthy, and FR has seen that over the years -- you can tell that just by watching the gem:treasure conversion rate. Let's not pour more money into the system.

Ehh, it was way worse back then. I joined the day the site opened to the public so I've seen the lag, the downtime, the familiar bonding glitches, triple basic 'rare (spiral, snapper, etc)' hatchlings being sold for 500k, etc etc.

Recently, for a few months I put in mostly minimal effort due to real life strains and was still able to afford genes and such. Compare that to back then, I was coli grinding for HOURS just to earn 50k.

I do agree that there should be wayyyy less grindy ways to earn treasure (still hoping for that adventure thing all these years later!) but it isn't quite as bad as when this was written. You can easily coast along doing the bare minimum (15 minutes of effort collecting t from familiars, gathering, other dailies) and still end up with a decent amount each day.

If anything, there are way more ways to make treasure now than then. Sometimes when I'm feeling cheap, I'll buy underpriced familiars, melt them down and sell the mats. If I get doubles from chests, I'll do the same. It adds up over time.

I never play the fairgrounds but I make money very easily just by having a bunch of fodder pairs that I breed, let the babies grow to adults, and sell at exalt price (so I don't even have to train), which nets me 7k-9k usually per dragon. Then I also make money from coli. Baldwin is a great feature for both the easy materials and new things to resell off of it.

I agree with the people above, while I did not join back then, I have only heard the most laggy things about coli, and the dragon economy was much more of a seller's market rather than a buyer's market.

I feel like gaining treasure isn't that big of a problem on FR, even without the use of coliseum and fairgrounds. Auction house is an amazing way to make money with little time, as is baldwin. So I think the situation is very different. Dragon overpopulation is something that was inevitable, and is a buyer's market. The main problem is that taste is subjective, and what you think is fodder, may be someone's perma.

Reading some of the replies in 2017 of the deviantart post, I do have to disagree with lair expansions being expensive (250kt for 5 slots), since it's an important treasure sink so inflation doesn't occur and make treasure useless. If any users want tips on how to make treasure, just shoot me a PM :D

(EDIT: @rogue I know this isn't serious, but I just saw 'expand my hair easier'. You made my day XD
