TOPIC | Having trouble staying motivated
1 2
These things keep happening to me. I get a surge of interest, I play for awhile, feed my dragons every day, spend time with my familiars, play artifracture until I max my lucky streak, do trivia, grab an item, gather, battle monsters in the coliseum, etc.

But then over the next week, I run out of steam, until I fall out of activity entirely.

It sucks because I want to be more involved in this - I missed out a lot due to my previous inactivity, and I really don't want to drop the game again.

I feel like there's so many possible goals that take a long time to obtain, and I don't have a single goal I want to do more than the others. I don't know how to just... relax and have fun. I don't even know what to do to *have* fun other than grind endlessly in the coliseum or visit the website every thirty minutes to stock up on reagents, or other such things.

I had this same problem with Neopets as a kid. How do you guys stay motivated, and how can I start enjoying this game again?

@Zachski I have the exact same problem... play a few months, disappear for years. It's even harder to get motivated to come back knowing how many event items, skins, accents you've missed. I have an entire list of goals and none are instantly possible. It's kind of difficult if you're used to games that give instant gratification. Like you ding a few levels a day. You move and get an achievement. Sound familiar?

FR is just a browser game so if you want to stay motivated you have to reward yourself. I do this by setting smaller goals. Before, I was buying lair expansions, breeding projects, fodder, items, currency all at once and never ever felt like I was getting anywhere. At the moment I'm just keeping my head down and coli grinding. But only for an hour at a time. People like us burn out really quickly so don't solider on if you feel yourself getting bored.

@Psycho
I suppose so... I just feel bad because rewarding myself costs treasure, treasure costs time and energy, which are what I'm having trouble investing.

Especially Artifracture - that game frustrates the heck out of me the more I play it, and the more I play the more I feel like I lose my ability to recognize patterns (which you'd think the opposite would be the case - I'd be getting more skilled with practice)

I don't even have a short term goal - I have 9 new hatchlings, unnamed. I have enough food stores to keep my dragons fed for awhile, if I feed them every day.

Grinding the coli is difficult for me, but then as much as I love RPGs, it's always been difficult to just sit down and grind away. Leveling up your first dragons is hard, and right now my three highest dragons are 10, 10, and 9. A long ways away from 25. And it feels like there's items I need for alchemy, Swipp, and Crimm, that are locked behind high level areas.

And for that matter, Swipp requires extremely high stacks of stuff that I'd have to grind in the coliseum for...

I never realized that people actually hoarded food until they had stacks of 99, which is apparently a great way to make money on the auction house - and that apparently they get their food through the coli while spending their gather turns on scavenging.

Meanwhile, even grinding in low level areas, it still took me several days to get 15 of a single thing, I can't imagine grinding enough to get 50 of something for Swipp.

Maybe I'm just missing the point because I'm trying to metagame too much... I dunno.

It doesn't help that I don't really *know* anyone here all that well, especially because I tend to have trouble getting invested in the game itself, and approaching the forums is difficult for me because I feel guilty over only being sporadically interested.

On the other side of the hiatus thing - I took a break for about a year an a half. Came back super motivated by all the new stuff. New breeds! New genes! So many new familiar to collect!
(Seriously - there were around three times as many as when I left).

@Zachski
Tell you what though - while I can't help with your progens, if you like I can bump the third derg up to 20 or so and that'll help you level up the other two much faster. I also checked their stats - the distribution you're using will be crippling your ability to Coli. This guide is one of the most common (and best) references:

@Zackski I feel exactly the same way. The only way I overcame it was by setting goals. I'm someone that wants to be doing everything properly, the best I can, at all times.

I used to play WoW pretty heavily and as a newbie on that game everything is overwhelming. You're seeing people running around that seem like they're stupidly high level, in insane gear, on insane mounts, with amounts of gold that seem unreachable. And you're like, well what do I do? That person is grinding dungeons to make gold, that other person is levelling pets to sell, that person is farming one specific material, whereas that person is levelling fishing. How am I supposed to do all this?!?!? But you work at it over time. First you get that extra level, then you get that bit of gear and with that unlocks a mount, and then you can grind and before you know it you're also stupidly high level, with awesome gear, awesome mounts and a stack of gold.

FR is the same on a smaller scale. I've been on this game since before Baldwin was a thing and I'm still only level 7. It bothers me sometimes because I feel like for my standard I should be max level in everything already... but it takes time. One thing at a time. I know if I keep my focus on one thing, I'll progress in that thing quicker, therefore keeping me motivated. I'll focus on Baldwin later. Right now I have an amount of treasure I'm working to get to.

If I were in your position my first goal would be to get a team maxed out. It can feel like an absolute slog but by the time you're done you'll have a huge stack of stuff you can sell and a team that can farm anywhere, anytime so you'll be better equipped for other aspects of the game.

i can kind of relate? i tend to get these times when i'm not as energetic and motivated to do stuff around here, so i just do dailies. sometimes i miss out. sometimes i don't feed my dragons until they're at 80%. i don't really push myself, because then i would start hating it all probably
but then i get back and it's great!!

now it's hard to tell how you personally could start really loving it again, because it's different for everyone, i assume. but i think you definitely should write down all the goals you mentioned. even the small ones! then you can kind of just, plan for them, how you will get them, how your time here will be better when you achieve these. for me, it helps to have some sort of tracker of my progress and i love to have a thread about them. maybe you'd also enjoy posting in the challenge/quest megathread as you do things?
i kind of agree with the statement that you should start leveling your team to lv25. it's a huuuge improvement

also think about what you do when you start feeling unmotivated again, if you know. maybe bonding gets you down, maybe the fairgrounds. try to avoid them? i mean they help you with money but if it's a struggle, you probably shouldn't do them. then think about what you love/what you'd love to do! maybe writing lore, grinding the coli with ease to get stuff, breeding, you name it

the most important thing though, is to remember there's no correct way of playing here. you do you! whatever makes you happy, just do that. FR is supposed to be fun, and it's alright to take little breaks or hiatuses. your pixel dragons will be waiting for you either way ;3c

Also, I'm trying to build Zaiviss following that guide - as for Penumbra, I simply haven't found myself justifying the price of a Tincture for her yet (EDIT: Though that was when I had actually gotten myself down to really low treasure levels after emerging from my previous hiatus - I went ahead and bought one, though I'll save it for now). And I'm fairly certain Eliminate's gonna be mighty expensive, and I've been trying to grind for it :/ Unless I misunderstood the guide, I think I've been actually following it. It didn't say what order to level anything in, just... gave level 25 stats. As far as Fimbulvetr goes, I just really wanted a mage. I know it's not optimal, I just... really wanted a mage. That healing spell helps for longevity purposes and maintaining that 20% exp boost.
