I don't get it. I've only been playing for a little bit because I was grounded and had my laptop taken away but I really like this game and now I'm back. I see lots of people talking about exalting and it seems so evil I don't like it. Dragons are such amazing, beautiful, precious animals and for even just one to be gone like that makes me really sad :(
I'm not ever going to exalt a dragon ever. I've only had them for a day but I really love my dragons a lot X3

OceanBean I used to be like that, too. People exalt for money, lair space, or if they simply look ugly. If you keep all of your dragons, you're eventually going to run out of lair space. While keeping all of your dragons and never exalting them may seem harmless, lair space exists, sadly. Plus, the expansions get REALLY crazy expensive quickly.

Money, basically. It's one of the main ways to earn money in this game.

Yeah, a lot of people buy and exalt for dom, or for profit.

They don't die unless the persons personal lore says they do. Officially, they go to serve their deity in battle and in other ways, like for example a light dragon becomes a scribe or a water dragon goes to serve at the Scrying Workshop (if they were exalted to arcane).
Yeah, from a game mechanic standpoint they all but cease to exist, but in lore, it is definitely NOT evil unless someone makes it that way in their personal lore.

Money, the dragon is ugly, dom, need lair space. Some people might exalt for lore (e.g. the dragons parent trains their kids to serve the Deity so all the parent's kids are exalted.)
There are also challenges that some people do that need you to exalt a dragon if a certain condition is met (usually it dies in the coli.)
And exalting isn't evil. The cannon lore is that exalted dragons serve their deity directly. So all the dragons I've exalted are now in the service of Flamecaller
making burnt cookies for eternity xD

The official site lore is that exalted dragons are still alive and go off to serve their deity in a similar way to military service. The definition of exalt is to think very highly of someone or rise to a higher rank. It's a huge honour for dragons to be exalted. Think about it, they get to go live with their god. That's amazing :D
In site terms it's vital to control the population. There's a limited amount of lair space and dragons can potentially produce unlimited amounts of offspring so you need a way to remove some of them from active lairs. There are nearly 40 million total dragons on flight rising. If exalting didn't exist everyone would have run out of space years ago.
It's also a great way to earn money. Instead of selling a dragon to other players where it takes up space you're selling them to the site where they still exist and look pretty but don't take up any space which leaves room for more pretty dragons.
Whether or not you exalt is a personal choice but it isn't a bad thing both in lore terms and gameplay terms :D

Vyxen Oh I guess I can see then. Still, I don't EVER want to exalt any of my dragons ever. It seems mean to tell them I love them then get rid of them forever :(

There'll be more pretty dragons. You can't keep EVERY dragon that's just ok looking or worse, the same way a whole community is not going to fit in one house.(which I assume is the first lair size in comparison)
And, that feather set won't pay for itself. In lore, it's to serve the deities(war or otherwise), and for anyone not patient enough to resell from the marketplace, it's great money and a source of loot from the Coliseum. You can even recover one every few weeks too, if you regret exalting them.

Money. The reason for everything.
