She was small for her age, but even with a heavy pearl hanging from a sling around her neck, she hopped from stone to stone amid swelling waves and buffets
Pearlcatcher hatchlings like to use slings to carry their pearl even at an young age. what a perfect daughter too, so cute. a shame she dies
Quote:

"Just like we talked about, you must perform the divination ceremony at the small basin," started Aguar, "and then you must descend into the pool as far as your wings will take you."
Dragons swim with their wings.

An hour passed, and Aguar's heart started to race with anxiety. Normally, the rites would take no longer than half that time.

Splash had moved closer to the pool, eyes transfixed on the surface, until she squealed with glee
Why must the cute ones die.

Aguar rushed to help, gripping his son's forelegs and guiding him onto the stone floor

The fresh water acted as a safe playground for hatchlings learning to swim and learn to breath the water
okay cant find the perfect gif but someone on the writing team watches envegelion because a liquid is filled in those mechs cockpits that the piolets just breath in. It's really cool to see water dragons have the ability but i thought it would be thorugh gills that water dragons have
not streight up being able to swap breathing types.

I know that everyone's freaking out right now about Splash and Tidelord not giving out any more prophecies (trust me, I am too), but can we talk about how much damage that maelstrom probably did? I live on the USA's East Coast, and I'm seen my fair share of hurricanes. I know how much damage they do to buildings on the coast.
Consider that the storm hit the Tsunami Flats and the Driftwood Drag - the places where the youngest, smallest, and most vulnerable clans live. And considering that the Sea of a Thousand Currents was described as "typically calm," it's unlikely that many clans would have storm-proofed their lairs. So we have a huge, powerful storm that absolutely no one saw coming and no one prepared for. We could be looking at Sandy-level or even Katrina-level destruction here, folks. How many lairs were destroyed by the storm? How many dragons are homeless because of it? How many dragons are dead?

Kamak swung his head slowly around, tears streaming from his ocean-blue eyes. "She's gone, torn from my claws. I lost her. I... I failed. I'm so sorry!"
Aguar stood motionless for a moment, fighting back panic. Kamak was clutching Splash’s pearl tightly to his chest. Splash was never without it.

"Stay here," said Aguar, as he leapt to the mouth of the cave.
okay but why not go out to where you think your daughter would be insted of relying on tidelord's visions?

AHH~ just wait till April and you'll hear him announce the new festival. You're worrying too much.
Anything i didnt miss that was mentioned in the story that is now canonized feel free to say it in this thread and ill add it to the quote underneath this line.

Ohh boy. There's a lot of....implications from what happened. I can't see anything less than near total destruction due to a hurricane...which had a supercell in it.
On our world, it's possible for hurricanes to have supercells in them (and other stuff too).
(That's a wall of nasty you don't want to deal with-though it's a shelf cloud, not a wall cloud. Also it's just an example-it's unrelated to the fancy chart about a supercell in a hurricane.)
'As the inclement weather stirred itself into an all-out hurricane, a supercell that resembled the Twisting Crescendo began to bear down on the shallows, tearing roofing off of fishing shacks and ripping terrestrial lairs to shreds.'
I take this to mean that there's an overall hurricane with a supercell as a part of it. And given how violent and destructive they are even in areas that build to try and minimize damage, that it happened in an area that hadn't seen such phenomena before and was thus very much unprepared...
It's not looking good. Particularly since a lot of structures are made of wood. Do I need to explain how tornadoes can take the softest thing and turn it into a piercing weapon? And then add that to storm surge just from the hurricane itself-which tends to deal a lot of, if not most, damage.
All I can think of, knowing that the characters note the direction the storm was coming from was wrong, was that makes it even worse (on top of everything else being awful). A lot of how buildings are built to withstand bad weather deals with knowing which direction stuff like winds come from. When it comes from a different direction than what is expected, additional damage can occur due to not having things reinforced for that direction. This includes things like trees too.
'Aguar cast his gaze across a sea that was rising and falling with frustrated swells. No one in the clan had received word of this frightening gale, either through divination or word-of-mouth. The wind was coming from the wrong direction.'
A final note for my massive post here-God dammit Windsinger!

Wait was his sister his charge? Because I was thinking the pearl was going to be his new charge. Which will be sad b/c according to I think one of the "ask the teams" the pearls are really delicate and layers tear off regularly. Which means that his charge will slowly deteriorate until he has nothing left of his sister.

The family followed the path to a chamber lit by a series of decorative braziers, each constructed of large sea shells and dried coral. (Fishpine Reef) At the very center of the room was an enormous pool, carved directly into the stone floor. Its surface was still, a perfect darkened mirror.(entrance to Leviathan Trench)
going by the map, it's probably around this little area:
but since we can't see the leviathan trench or the spiral keep, all we can do is assume that they're not that far from each other, which means clans that live in the trench can get a bit of a headstart with prophecies, compared to those that live near the shore.

the way I see it 'big bubbles/big prophesies' stay close to the floor, 'small bubbles/minor prophesies' will float up and be near the shallows. You want an important prophecy you gotta go down real far. Timing also might be a thing, like if one is far into the future it would be close to the bottom but if it's happening today you're more likely to find it far up?
There was also some experiments where scientists made a liquid that humans can breath in with no issue once you get past the reflexive drowning panic. So dragons going from air to freshwater can be a thing, though I wonder if saltwater is harder to breath in for them?
Also if finding lost dragons is a thing prophecies can do then would you rather use 30 min to find your lost daughter and maybe even get an idea of her safety versus hours of searching the ocean full of debris and other dragons with no idea how much time has lapsed (he mentions he has no idea how long he was unconscious for) for the current to have dragged her who only knows where....yeah I'd head for the cave too but then I'd start looking if that method fails.
I wonder if they can scry with her pearl to find out if she's alive?

with standard fish:
Quote:
Gills are feathery organs full of blood vessels. A fish breathes by taking water into its mouth and forcing it out through the gill passages. As water passes over the thin walls of the gills, dissolved oxygen moves into the blood and travels to the fish's cells. (source)
being able to breathe both dry air and water doesn't happen much in reality, but there are quirky things called lungfish that can manage it under certain conditions:
Quote:
A distinctive characteristic of the Queensland lungfish is the presence of a single dorsal lung, used to supplement the oxygen supply through the gills. During times of excessive activity, drought, or high temperatures (when water becomes deoxygenated), or when prevailing conditions inhibit normal functioning of the gills, the lungfish can rise to the surface and swallow air into its lung. More frequent air breathing is correlated with periods of greater activity at night when it uses the lung as a supplementary organ of respiration. [...] It is also the only facultative air breather lungfish species, only breathing air when oxygen in the water is not sufficient to meet their needs. The lung is a single long sac situated above and extending the length of the body cavity, and is formed by a ventral outgrowth of the gut. (source)
so i imagine Water dragons have a more advanced version of the lungfish setup, "inhaling" the water through their mouths as normal, and then using other physical adaptations to direct that water to their gills rather than down into their stomach or lungs. it would probably be a pretty weird feeling at first, though, hence the adjustment period.

Okay there's something I want to point out as this was a question that I've had for a while.
The wording on the passage you get when you mouse over the Sea of a Thousand Currents is ambiguous on whether the power to divine the future is something that all water dragons have but in limited capacity or that only a few water dragons have the ability to see the future.
Quote:
...he had yet to display any prophetic abilities. Aguar heaved a sigh, hoping the dormant talent would present itself today.

Ok so I find this quote really fascinating it's a gold mine of information.
It establishes that
1. It's a right of passage for water dragons to get their "first revelation" from the Tidelord.
2. Oracles have different ranks
3. It is possible for young dragons to hear prophecies before their rite of passage
4. It is possible to fail the rite of passage (why would Aguar be worried otherwise?)
I think this lore made me really appreciate water like I might consider vacationing there someday.
(Edit: I was ninja'd on that last point by @ViralN9)

Remember when the Twisting Crescendo came to life again and was going in the opposite direction from how it blew before? Think the turn in the wind changed the airflow in, I don't know, other parts of the world? Like, maybe their neighbors?
I'm blaming the Windsinger for this one. No wonder the Tidelord decided to give everyone the silent treatment.
