I always figured the safest way of preventing it would be cremation and grinding bones to dust. I mean: no body merged with no body = no emperor. But now that I'm reading some of these comments, there are other ways that seem to be more appealing.
Maybe your clan celebrates the life of the dead imperial through ritual cannibalism or with a great bonfire cremation?
Perhaps they take no precaution and an emperor arises so they have to hold it captive, or feeding dead imps to scavengers?
Could they be tossing the bodies into the resting place of their deities(like the Wyrmwood) or possibly using scrolls to change breeds at the end of their life cycle?
Do you have an emperor in your lair, and if so how do your other imps feel about it?
Let us know in the comments!

Oh. Oh dear.
We have only three imperials. One of them is very aloof and avoids talking to other dragons, and our clan mage just doesn't get on with other imperials.
So, we haven't come up with what to do if they die, but most likely they'll be buried in marked graves far from each other, or our local sorceress can...ahem, take care of any corpses by feeding them to her familiars. Where we live, cremation wouldn't work.

Other than the tiny emperor already living in the clan...
The 20 giants I have all ideally just decided that not dying would be the best plan of action. Plan B would be to Have Traali possibly turn any deceased imperials into tree of some sort, or plant a tree on top of the buried corpse so that the roots trap the dragon beneath the ground. (The tree's growth being accelerated by druidic magic of course.) Bodies/trees also being planted a good distance from one another, and the trees also marked to prevent cutting them down, or any burials too close to the already occupied tree.
Given the mass amount of giant imperials that live in my clan, this is something they've taken into great consideration. They would make a terrifying emperor and no one wants that. lol.

Well I've only got one imp, so. Yah.
But considering there doesn't seem to have been an emperor for a really really long time, I think whatever the imperials are doing *coughcannibalismcough* seem to be working pretty well. It's not like they're created every time two imps happen to die at the same spot. Just let them do their thing.

Chain down bodies near area frequented by deep-ocean scavengers and let them eat it.
Though my clan's necromancer is trying to find a way to stop imperials from ever becoming emperors.

Our imperials have special rituals they perform on themselves when they are alive and also when any of them die. Blessings and rites of soul protection and other protection spells leave my imps confident that they won’t ever become emperors.

As a mono Imp lair, we've got our ways. They usually consist of lighting the body/ies on fire and celebration of the lost.
However, those who aren't as aristocratic as the other *cough cough*Lucio, Verde, Eryn, etc*cough* tend to simply bury them away from each other in hopes someone makes a lil' mistake.

Imperials are my favourite breed, so i have alot of them, but they all have their unique views on Emperors, as we technically have one in our lair.
Mierith is kinda the "living emperor" as she has a deceased friend who's been with her ever since she was little, a male guardian named Kallisto. It's almost like he possesses her, but he can distance himself from her (and when he does, she gets very worried)
So most of the dragons in my lair don't talk about emperors that much out of respect for her, but she would most likely liked to be tossed into the sea, or cremated i guess.
my other dragons in the lair, like Dawn or Althalos, would probably like to have their ashes used as fertilizer to grow some trees. Carrion or Isokel would prefer to be cremated i think, and Vesuvius probably would like to come back as an Emperor.
I think my Imperials are working together with their magics to guarantee they don't go all Emp when they die, but Carrion has tried numerous times to pacify an Emperor.

We're all a bunch of hippies and never go to war or get involved in any intense fights. So, luckily, Emperors aren't a big concern for us.
When an Imperial dies naturally, though, we do the same thing that is done for everyone else. The deceased are cremated and we let the wind scatter their ashes into the sky and over the sea. It's always done at night so that they can finally end their chase and "capture" the moon.
