TOPIC | Ridgeback lore annoys me

Okay, I really need to get this off my chest, because it's been bothering me.

Realistically, the sea food only diet is the worst idea I've ever heard. It makes no sense that a desert species would exclusively eat seafood. Ridgies are huge, there's no way they're staying alive off of such a rare resource, especially when the main source of water in the expanse is cacti.

Even if there was a good water source with fish, they hate water, so they're pretty much dependent on other dragons. And being dependent on others in the desert is a horrible idea, especially if the desert in question is the shifting expanse which is, and I quote, "defense enough for the wicked, industrious dragons that call the desert their home."
The key word there is wicked. There is no way that dragons who are described as "wicked" would take care of a ridgeback out of the kindness of their hearts.

Of course, you could say Stormcatcher created them, and that's why they're weird. The problem with that is how did ridgebacks survive in the first place? The first ridgebacks had no way to steal from others, since they probably didn't have access to clans other than their own mono breed clans at first, and they can't get their own food, because they hate water.

I can't be the only one bothered about this, right?

@Lightningwind

One of the better explanations for this I’ve heard(admittedly on Tumblr, I’ll try to track down the orignal post) is that the Stormcatcher specifically created this trait to encourage problem-solving and thinking ‘outside the box’ among his children, which I quite like from a story-based perspective.

(But I’m definitely a bit miffed about the ‘wicked’ aspect of Lightning lore, especially after the USSR comparison. :v)

i dont remember if its canon lore, but ive heard the idea that ridgebacks use fishing nets! they just dont want to fall in the water.
ridgies look really friggin heavy and dense, i wouldnt be surprised if the reason they hate water is because of how unaerodynamic and dense they are.

maybe its like cats, since theyre originally desert dwellers. cats catch fish but everyone knows cats dont like water!

Imo ridgies steal from each other too - like penguins and many corvids. It's not a malicious thing, it's just what they do. They expect their own stuff to be stolen as well and unless someone gets caught in the act there's no fuss, they just either steal it back or move on.

Wicked is a bit odd (where's the USSR reference?) but disliking water does not prevent a seafood diet. It was pretty common originally for sailors on large boats not to be able to swim, and shore fishing doesn't require you to go into the water. Heck, the original Ridgies would all have been lightning dragons - zap the water and scoop them off the surface!

I very much agree it was to encourage problem solving, they do in fact use traps to catch fish; from their encyclopedia page "the bounty of the Sea of a Thousand Currents harvested in traps" when referring to their borrowing. Lightning flight is focused on ingenuity, "Of all the dragons, lightning dragons are the most ambitious, changing the world to adapt to them, rather than adapting to the world." Don't like water but prefer to eat fish? We'll find a way. ;D

You can rationalize Ridgebacks pretty well if you think of them as cats basically. Sure cats love by default fish and hate water, BUT there are always outliers. There are sure Ridgebacks that do not mind water at all. (there are many cats who have the quirk of not being afraid of water)

1. coatls catch lava fish that live in volcanoes obv,,, biology 101,,,,gosh

2. the shifting expanse has two coasts, which are probably the areas with the most plantlife/stable temperatures/habitability in general. I just think of them as having originated near the habitable coasts and being averse to being totally submerged in water - so they can skim/surface feed like some sea birds (and like people think pterodactyls might have!) and wade-'n-stab like herons I guess

please ping me to get my attention!
I headcanon the "afraid of water" thing is an in-universe stereotype & Ridgies are just unusually aware of its presence, sort of like a living divining rod. Don't want that stuff getting into the electrical equipment, plus being able to find water sources would be useful survival skill in their native Flight. :D

What bugs me is Guardians; they're supposed to be the Water breed & the Guardians born in the SoaTC would presumably spend much of their life in it (unless their Search took them elsewhere), and yet they just look like a generic Western dragon. :\ I get there's the Rule* & they probably wanted the breed to look like something that could make sense to have in other Flights (despite all flights having water on their borders...), but argh. And I'm saying this as someone who likes Guardians!

*"All breeds must have one head, one tail, two wings on the back, and four legs." (paraphrased)
