I know a lot of people don’t like it but I see little wrong except for the fact it can get covered up easily. I really love the lore opportunities it poses, too. Here’s doneodeas I had, feel free to add!
-are either actual bugs, attracted by genetic or magical anomalies in a dragon, magic wisps created from the dragons own aura, or passing magical threads that have been spun into fluttering forms by the dragons magic or genetic makeup
-their glow can brighten or dim in correspondence to emotion
-the glow can brighten or dim in correspondence with the dragons magical energy reserves or life force
-the fireflies can act as sensors or companions
-the fireflies are souls of past ancestors living on around and in their descendant (further: fir dragons without this gene in their parents, they simply act like a beacon for ancient spirits and the spirits gather around them, merging with their genes and blood therefore being passed down)
-more but it’s late I need to go

I like it too *lol* I was surprised to see it in the Scrying Workshop. Is there going to be an Encyclopedia entry about these insects that are so enthusiastically attracted to dragons? I hope so.

sapling hub link & small green momma & tiny orange cat
Awesome ideas! I like the brighten/dim ideas and I might use those.
My first thought was that they are usually markings, but they can "come to life" if the dragon wants them to/prompts it in some way. They're not real bugs, but sparks of magic.

I like the first idea but all of them are so good! Because of this, I might get the gene on one of my dragons for lore reasons!

EverAthena Very cool ideas!! I really love the idea of the glow being effected by emotions & the result of magic!

VeiledOverdose Ooooh I adore the idea of them being sparks of magic!!
I think it would be interesting if it was another Coli gene, perhaps one that is only found in the Mire, Rainstorm Jungle, or maybe the Blooming grove (for lore reasons).

My first thought was actually...
The fireflies are parasites from plague flight and they lay eggs under the dragons skin and then they just... hatch from the dragon...
Happy nightmares everyone

You start with an impossible goal: defeating the unbeatable enemy. And then you do whatever you gotta do to achieve it! Because even you can't know how much potential you have until you push yourself past your limits. THAT'S how you make yourself not just stronger... but stronger than you ever imagined you could be!

oooh but what if the bugs have different properties depending on the flight of the dragon? Like nature fireflies spread seeds and pollen, ice fireflies are cold to the touch and can freeze things, fire fireflies are little sparks and can start small fires, etc

my first idea was that dragons with the firefly gene secrete a pheromone or something that is undetectable to dragons and really does nothing but attract fireflies; this is passed down to offspring
everybody elses ideas are cooler lol

depending on the derg they can be a sorta particle-like thingy that appears from the dergs' magic. theyre not realy alive or helpful besides glowing a bit and making you look mysterious.
