Arcane crystals are radioactive and can make non-arcane dragons that live in arcane really ill as mentioned in the Pink Chalcedony description:

The Ashfall Wastes are practically inhospitable for ice dragons, they become incredibly ill. Wind dragons aren't much better, the ash is horrible for their lungs.
