I've been here for 5 months and only now am I getting more interested in Lore. I didn't ever plan on giving my dragons any stories since I 1, wasn't comfortable with having human ish roles such as knight for them and 2, I wasn't intrigued. I've been reading some lore but only from other forum sloths. It's really interesting!

Does anyone have tips for writing lore and should I take the world of FR's lore in to account?

you dont have to give them human-ish roles, i dont have that for mine either.. now granted, my dragons barely have any lore, but i have plans for them.
i do have a clanleader, but pretty much every pack/herd/flock/whatever has an alpha type, so thats kinda normal.. i do also have one dragon with lore from a friend of mine when she was training him for me to level 25, but that lore could still be interpreted as non human
most of the other lore things i got going on are more about their personality , something that happened to them or just their day to day lives , playing outside in the snow , digging a hole, whatever you can think of

lore is awesome in that you can literally make up anything you want in any ridiculous manner you want, and itll still be awesome :D

edit: you might wanna check up on your sig gif >.>

It's actually all up to you,but I think that using the FR world as a background helps a lot,not exactly sticking to the official lore, but I mean the terrains. And no,they don't have to have human-like roles. It all depends if you're writing the general clan lore or just a dragon's story. My tips for general clan lore: -First part should be about founding the clan: Where it was founded?Who was the founder(the best would be progens, but it's up to you)?In what circumstances it has been founded? -Include all the flight changes you have made and how the travels in between them could look like -Make a list of general facts about the clan somewhere(like who they are, when they were founded, current clan leaders, maybe some specific terms and swears, where they live currently, views on exalting, etc.?) -Invent some stories about some of your most special dragons, like how they came to the clan, maybe describe something like battles with Beastclans or other clans, finding an egg, etc.?Or if the clan leader has been changed, how it happened? ...and for specific dragon lore: -Character of the dragon or who is exactly going to be that dragon?Like how he/she behaves,his/her special abilities,his/her strong traits and weaknesses, relationships with other dragons,liked/disliked things -Make a dragon's history based on the traits you gave to this dragon, like how it came to the clan,his/her life as far as it's known -It may be this dragon's statements,it may look like diary/newspaper/chronicles entry or it may look like like a typical story from a book,it's all up to you. -Make a few stories about his/her life in the clan, like what did happen while he/she was in the clan, witnessed something important in the clan or was part of it or even was a cause of it? Hope this list helps a bit [emoji=coatl winking]

If you want to have them be particularly non human, you can contrast their society with that of beastclans, have both gorups interact, attack each other, make alliances, etc. That way it should be easier to make dragons feel more like dragons than humans with fur/scales and wings [emoji=guardian winking]

HMMM let's see.... This might be a bit hard to sum up but I'll give my best.

So firstly, it's up to you what you want to write regarding your clan's lore. You decide what roles, what background, what purpose and what relations your dragons have. Keep in mind that if you want good world-building, the environment and its inhabitants are supposed to have an impact on each other.
 • I personally follow science or science-fiction, but also follow the basic FR lore with only one exception: there is no magic. I take my lore very seriously aka it's a big part of my desire to keep building my clan, my characters, their stories, the flora, fauna, etc. I understand this takes place on a different planet which is very similar to Earth so I just build from that. Here's a thread that might help out with some geographical points (1). What humans call or consider magic is completely against laws of nature and is impossible so I don't like it, therefore I like basing my lore on facts or science fiction, fantasy is a big no. Still, you decide!
 • When writing clan lore, decide if you want to base your clan's residence and its residents on the same planet the site's lore takes place in or if you want to build your own world
 • When writing about your clan's geographical position, climate, flora, fauna, characteristics, society, resources, etc, if you're following FR's lore, do some research on food items and their descriptions. Creating a map can also greatly improve your lore and connections between elements.
 • When it comes to the story and background of your clan (and it takes place on Sornieth) work on who founded it, what sort of rules there are, who the leaders are, what sort of societal customs there are, what languages and dialects are spoken, if there are any specific ranks, what sort of entertainment or education your clan has, if you have any symbols or traditions, what level of technology your clan has, if other clans (Dragon and Beastclan) have an impact on you and your community or market, what sort of market and trading system you have, delicacies, foods, artifacts, crafts, architecture, if Sornieth's religion has an impact on your clan members, how is nature treated, do you have agriculture and other types of food production or domestication, etc. Here are some pages that could help out: (1) (2) (3) (4)
 • When working on your characters, make sure you take notes, even if it's just random blurbs or thoughts, they still help. Some completely random facts about their life or their personality can help you create amazing and realistic people.
 • If you're having trouble designing your character's (dragon's) physical characteristics or small details, I suggest you take a look at this thread: (1) This is a thread I will have to redo, sadly, but I'll get to it at one point!
 • I base my characters on their occupations. That is not something that makes them what they are, but that's a starter point for me. I have a complex and realistic approach on my clan's lore, trying to make it as down-to-earth (or down-to-sornieth hahahfjgk) as possible, so normal jobs like crop grower, orchardist, fisher, treasure keeper, guard, potter, weaver and cattle herder are something that appears in my lore. However, if you want to base your lore on dark murderers, enlightened oracles, mysterious nomads, intriguing scientists, handy craftsmen or peaceful dryads, then go for it! Who am I to stop you ahahah. Here's a post that could help you out with coming up with jobs: (1)
 • When it comes to building a character's personality, there are A LOT of questions a person can ask themselves. I have several interesting links: (1) (2) (3)
 • When it comes to relationships and general interactions with other people, concentrate on their behaviour, their interests and how they affect their social status, their ways of coping with stress, their social or educational status, if they're antisocial, asocial or social, keep in mind their way of talking, if they use jargon, what are their political and moral stances, etc.
 • AND LASTLY, when it comes to actual writing, here are some helpful prompts: (1)

If you have any questions ever, feel free to contact me or go crabwalk through the Help or Guides forums, or the Creative Corner, maybe you'll find something!

You can definitely make your dragons less humanoid! They don't have to be knights, florists, or shopkeepers. That's the great thing about lore, it can be about whatever you want it to be. I, personally, prefer lore that is at least loosely based on FR canon, but I've seen a lot of people create their own worlds for their dragons. It really is about getting creative and having fun, so don't let anything limit you. I don't have a lot of lore on the site right now, since I am mainly focusing on writing it all out in story form and it's mostly in its rough/planning stages right now. However, I will leave a few tips:
1. I would look at world-building resources for coming up with a history and culture for your clan. Or, if they are not humanoid, look up animal behavior and pack behavior (of course you can create your own rules when it comes to this, but having a few behaviors that coincidence with reality will help your lore feel more authentic).
2. If you are into fiction writing, having the history and events of your clan written out can really help develop the setting and your dragons' characterization. Plus, it gives you some snippets to include in dragon bios. RPGing is another great option as well.
3. Most of all have fun and remember this is not a chore. It is a wonderful outlet for creativity and you really can go crazy with it, if you want.

There are literally no rules about that you can put in your lore as long as it's all SFW. You can make your dragons be robots that behave as mindless feral beasts and live on Mars which is terrorized regularly by a moon-sized hamster if you want.
