If you suddenly had a ton of gems/treasure to spend, what's something you would do that really doesn't serve a purpose other than to show off how rich you are exactly?
I would pick a retired item that isn't overly rare/expensive but still up there, and just buy all of them, whenever they appear on the realm-wide AH. If someone was selling that item on the forums, I'd PM them and offer more than their asking price so that they'd trade it to me to accumulate as many of the item as possible.
I'd watch it reach a point where people start questioning; who buys them so fast and why aren't there any people selling it almost ever. I'd keep it up for long enough for people to notice that finding that item on the AH or on the forums has become quite the challenge.
Not sure what I would do after, though. Maybe send the items out to random people or put one up on the AH for cheap every now and then to slowly get them back into circulation.
But yeah trying to create a brief shortage of a retired item sounds like it'd be fun
