In lore, how do you explain starmap/constellation, firefly, gembond, filigree, and opal? Do you explain it? Every other gene except these can be explained away as markings but these genes are a bit...weird? I'm always struggling with acknowledging the fact that my dragons have entire galaxies on their butts or just going like "Yeah, it's just a.... birthmark?". Are dragons with filigree just born with metal on them? How does that work? Do fireflies just flock to some dragons? Do the dragons ever get annoyed with bugs flying and crawling all over them?

@Dreamson
well i have been on a hiatus when starmap/constellation,firefly and opal were introduced but.. i think you wont need to give any explanation for gembound and opal as long as its an EARTH flight dragon.. like.. its their affinity with earth? even nature dergs could pass for this i guess? As for starmap i think arcane dragons could go off saying that arcanist did some expeeriment? because technically he keeps watching the stars?

i've heard gembond be a potential lore topic in that it's parasitic and can entirely cover a dragon into rock/can cause a dragon to have inabilities to move etc.
maybe opal is the same way?
firefly is just glowy bug friends to me. kinda like [item=ethereal entourage]
star/con to me could literally be made out of galaxies. i like the idea of dragons being non-physical beings, or gods/goddesses that have more than one body and dragons just happen to be one. maybe someone has a different approach, but i love that one
filigree reminds me of the stereotype dragons that always sleeping on hoarded treasures. that's all i have to say about filigree lol

according to actual lore, gembond is a result of getting bitten by an onyx cobra.
[item=Onyx Cobra]
thats onyx-pected
ive also heard someone headcanon that opal was the result of gembond falling off, like a scab
as for the others, i got nothing

Onyx Cobra
Meat
The venom of an onyx cobra can cause the onset of a gembond in dragons. It is wise to give them a wide berth. (KS Sponsored by Opal.)

My username is drawingdeamon! Please mind the spelling!
My fandragons are in my Hibernal Den!
@lovebite
All of my star/con dragons are ethereal beings. I just can't justify a normal, everyday dragon looking like a literal galaxy. That gembond idea is actually really good...

@drawingdeamon i actually forgot that.. butt then it would also open up to more lore like.. a dragon could have some other gene before and then it changes into gembound? MAybe tertiary gene:gembound is nothing more thban an onyx cobra's venom? O_o

ohhh this is so interesting. can gembond be caused naturally? i guess it would have to be from breeding too, right?
is it like an infection you can get from the cobra, and also maybe like... a curse?
also that headcanon is so cool!

[item= onyx cobra] for gembond
For opal, I think of the opalizing goo from Pearlcatchers hardening on dragons' bodies
Firefly are just little bugs
Filigree is extensive jewelry
I have no idea about starcon yet
Gembond: Onyx Cobra has been mentioned several times already, but yeah. When I first started on FR (back when there were literally only 5 terts), I had a lore idea that in my clan being bitten by an Onyx Cobra and developing Gembond was a rite of passage since 98% of my dragons had Gembond.
Starmap/Constellation: Echoing lovebite's idea above, some dragons can just be non-physical entities made of swirling x energy.
Firefly: I think of bright, contrasting Firefly as, well, actually Firefly friends and I think of darker Firefly as swarms of flies/mosquitoes/locus/etc that are attracted to the dragon for some reason. Plague's whole deal is about survival, and they love the 'walking biological experiment' as their aesthetic, so I wouldn't be surprised to see similar themed dragons being riddled with parasites and maggots and whatnot.
Filigree: Body modification/adornment like piercings for humans.
Opal: According to the flavour text that was on Opal's release news article, it's supposed to be a highly polished part of the dragon?? Kinda makes me think that a dragon with Gembond decided that their Gembond stones looked ugly in their raw form (or maybe they grew too big and heavy?) and they decided to go visit a gemcutter to grind, sand, and polish their Gembond into Opal.

...I'm using that idea somewhere now.
I'm playing with the idea of star/con being stardust.
If a dragon travels to the Starfall isles during a meteor storm they pick up stardust on their wings and bodies (Medium to light primary and secondary).
Or if they're patrolling during one, they pick up the stardust as well, though it can be brighter on them (Dark primary and secondary)

Please ping me even if you're not interested in the dragons I show you :)
