Part of that, for me, is just that I've been on the site a long time. Also, I have a fairly good memory for stories. Dragons don't enter my lair very often, but when they do, they get a small story in my mind about how they got there, what interactions they have with the other dragons, etc. After that, I can't bear to get rid of them, so they stay. And after years of that, I end up with 100+ dragons.

Lore.

I'm stuck eternally trying to write it because all of these ideas have happened in my mind, but all of my permas play a role in this lore story, so I can't get rid of them. A handful of them I have separate lore plans for, because of impulse ideas that I fell in love with, but overall? Lore is the reason I have 100+ permas. I am too attached to all of them. (I also really need to get to actually writing all my lore ack.)

With a lot of crying.

No but I just get attached. I mean unless I've got special lore for a dragon that I bred myself (or it's exceptionally interesting/attractive to me) I don't mind getting rid of them. I breed them a few times, keep one kid, and shove them off to serve Boss. If it's a dragon I bought or got another way I hate getting rid of them because I want their former people to be able to check in on them someday and see them still happy and loved. So my dragons leave eventually, but their mates get a permanent home.

I wish I could say that helps with the space issue, but it really doesn't lol
