TOPIC | Genes or UMAs?

I'm a free player, so I have to count my gems carefully. In my quest to prettify my dragons, should I prioritize gene scrolls (pretty much all my favorites are gem market) or skins?

(I suppose you get more bang for your buck with genes, since they can be passed down, but every day I find new gorgeous accents to drool over, especially anything with gold tracery. And genes don't get rarer and more expensive if you put off buying them).

it depends on the details, i'd say!
  • are the genes and skins for the same dragon? if so, how much do they overlap? which would you prefer looking at while you get money for the other - the gene or the skin?
  • do you breed those dragons? does the offspring look better with a chance for the gene included?
  • are the umas limited? how expensive are they? they vary pretty wildly in price

(and while help would work, this is a pretty decent topic for fr discussion as well, imo! personally, i often prioritize genes as that allows me to get a better look at uma possibilities later on)

For me, I usually try to go for genes, but end up buying UMAs anyways. If anything, I'd gem gene my dragons, then proceed to give them a UMA. I always make my FR cash in treasure, then trade them for Gems in the Items for Sale forum subtopic, so I will never be in any need to save gems in particular.

Plus, I don't breed my dragons, the genes are just for aesthetic purposes.

Since you're talking about FR-related stuff, you're in the right forum!

I think it depends on you, honestly. I've never spent a dime on this game but have earned all my gems through either converting treasure or selling items/dragons. I get your dilemma, because it's one I face periodically. I honestly put most of my gems into UMAs for both personal preference and because if I ever get bored of a UMA, it'll typically be worth at least what I paid for it, likely more when I decide to sell it. I can also remove it from a dragon and put it on any other dragon I want of the same breed and gender. Gem genes, on the other hand, you buy to put on a single dragon. That dragon will never be worth equivalent value to what you put into it unless it's like an XXX gen 1. For me, selling UMAs I've gotten bored of over the years has been the reason I'm able to afford both new UMAs AND gem genes for my dragons today.

It also doesn't help that I get bored with the appearance of some of my dragons after a while and then want to put new genes into them (or I gene them and suddenly a new gene comes out that I like on them better). That said, there's absolutely nothing wrong with buying gem genes instead.

So, tl;dr: in my opinion UMAs are a better investment/more worth the money, but there's nothing wrong with getting gem genes instead. It's your money to do with what you will!

Nope, this is the right forum to have such discussions!

I'd say it depends on the UMA and what your own goals are on the site. Some are limited-run accents, so if you miss out on those you'll likely never see them available again, except maybe from resellers at a marked up price if you're lucky. Even for accents that aren't limited run, it's not unusual to see accent shops to go on hiatus for extended periods or for the artist to leave FR entirely. My own practice is that if I see an accent I really like, I pick it up the first time it's available no matter what. If I end up not using, I can always resell it down the line.

But I think dragons can look great without accents, so I do personally prioritize genes over UMA. A dragon without genes but a nice accent doesn't feel as complete to me as a dragon with genes but no accent. I'm also a hatchery owner, so getting my dragons genes is always super important. :p

The eternal struggle! Honestly, I have huge fomo when it comes to UMs, since now a lot of people tend to retire things so they only become expensive the longer you wait. I also happen to LOVE matching dragons with accents, as you can probably tell from my lair, and supporting artists I love is one of my fav things about UMs.

Basically, so long as you're buying from the artist, you can generally expect to be able to get what ever gems you spent on a skin back pretty quickly, if you're selling at the artists original price. With genes, it's way more difficult to get that money back if you suddenly saw an skin you NEEDED to have.

That being said, if you're buying from the AH, from someone who's not the original artist, you never know how much you can sell if for again, so that's a bit more of a risk.

tl;dr ~ I generally prioritize UMs since genes are basically always available, and don't always retain their value after you apply them (unless you breed wow cause I dont), while skins can be limited and are usually pretty easy to sell if you're selling at the artists price.

Yup yup it depends on your goals.
We'd go with accents since they keep their value and you can resell them while the money you spent on genes disappears when you apply them and the dragon itself isn't worth the scrolls you used on it. And you can always buy dragons with pretty genes for a fraction of what the scroll itself costs.
But if you enjoy scrolling dragons the money you spend on them isn't a waste :D
