Greetings, all Dragonkind. After presenting my finds to my deity, I've decided to share this rather important discovery with all of you as well. My name is Aadom, and as one who seeks to benefit all flights (especially my own), I’ve recently discovered something that should absolutely be brought to your attention. However, it isn’t something negative. No, it’s something very, very interesting. A new creature that may serve extremely well as a new familiar - no, more than that, a lair requirement. I’ve named them Freds.
Freds are strange creatures, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. They are bipedal, with intelligence comparable to dragons, perhaps even surpassing it at a certain point. They lack our longevity, living relatively short lives, but I’m certain that trait can be bred out of them in the future. They have an alarming affinity to caring for and bonding with hatchlings, and are quite empathetic with a wide range of things. Including inanimate objects, at times.
They lack fur or scales, instead covered in a varied colored skin. It gets darker when exposed to a certain amount of sunlight, but it generally seems rather light. They’re quite small, at times smaller than hatchlings even at adulthood. But they are quite powerful for their size, at least the one I’ve found. He managed to stop my paw before I crushed him beneath me by mistake, though he was rather immobile for a few days afterwards.
As the first of its species I’ve discovered, though, there may be more variations. In fact, it claims that there are many different variations in the color of its skin, the strength of its kin, the intelligence of the ones related to him. At first glance, they all seem similar, but according to it, every single one is different. With its own conscious, thoughts, sentience. It tells many tales of strange lands I’ve never flown to, of peaceful and violent creatures alike, of ethereal beings unseen with the naked eye.
But, this one does not speak the language of dragonkind. No, it speaks a rather simple language. A language simple enough that my newest hatchlings were quickly able to pick it up alongside our own language, allowing me to communicate roughly with it. Though there are words that cannot be translated into their simple language.
As I said earlier, they seem to be extremely social creatures. After keeping my Fred for a few years - it calls its kind a word untranslatable into our language, so I’ve taken to simply calling them what I’ve named them - I managed to discover a second Fred. This one was female. As soon as the two Freds came into contact, they immediately bonded. They seem to speak the same language, though, once again according to it, they have many languages as we do.
Their breeding methods are strange, but functional. Their hatchlings, however, are very... different. They look nothing like how they will when grown, and they don’t come in eggs as our kind do. They have live children as the beastkind do. In fact, I would say they are most comparable to certain types of beastkind, aside from the rather startling intelligence they possess.
Their hatchlings - which they call infants, or babies, something they’ve also taken to calling our own hatchlings in a rather strange tone - age much more slowly than our own. It can take upward to twenty revolutions for their hatchlings to reach adulthood, unlike the few weeks it takes our kind. I do believe that after enough time around dragonkind, this will be bred out of them.
In fact, I believe that much of their issues can be bred out of their species. Unfortunately, alchemical potions and concoctions seem to have negative effects on their intelligence and health. Using certain potions, I was able to extend a certain Fred’s lifespan to over two hundred revolutions, but after they passed their eightieth, their intelligence once again began to diminish. By spending time with magic, they will most likely adapt to our longevity.
Which brings up another topic. They have incredible adaptiveness. A Fred can be raised in almost any environment, and through generations, they will become more and more resilient to the elements. To test this, I allowed two Freds - a male and a female - to be raised by a dragon under the Fire deity. While these Freds didn’t live as long - they have quite the weakness for heat - over time, they adapted to the flame and heat without drastically changing their appearance. It did not create a new species. They were still Freds, they simply built a resistance.
With everything I’ve found, I fully and wholeheartedly believe they should be studied further. They may have vast applications to almost every situation, and could help in the start of a lair immensely. I will leave decisions up to all of you of course, but please consider this proposal as one of interest. It may be of note to you that Freds are unable to be exalted as most who aren't Dragonkind, but they do have certain rituals similar to exalting that your deity's may find pleasing.
