TOPIC | [HUB] Ancient Breeds Theories
1 2
What we know:
- The Ancients can break the “2 wings, 4 legs, 1 tail” rule and most likely will
- There’s a huge chance we’re getting Gaolers, can’t really see staff avoiding them
- Some may look like “primitive” versions of modern breeds. (Once again, think Gaolers)
- The first ancient breed will be released on June 8, 2019.

Community Speculation:
- Swiftwings, a scrapped breed you may have seen around, have a possibility of being released as an ancient breed. Why? They don’t have to worry about the “at least 4 legs” rule, and they were remodeled into Pearlcatchers.
- We’ll probably get a water breed first because of the whole Tidelord debacle.
- Chitin was mentioned as a possible tertiary in the post... maybe we could get insectlike dragons!

What Has Already Been Proven Wrong:
- We are NOT going to get Emperors.
- We will (very probably not) get Couriers.
- I’ve seen someone talking about it... so we are NOT getting hybrids.

I’ve already posted one of my theories regarding Gaolers, but I have a few more off the top of my head. In order to begin the thread, here’s some of my personal thoughts:

- If we get skeletal/undead looking dragons, they’re going to come from Earth, not Plague. I feel like people attribute zombies to Plague for no good reason, considering their flight leader absolutely despises anything along those lines. However, Earth has an entire region of Dragonhome that’s basically a cemetery, filled with undead “skeletal wyrms” that have been known to attack trespassers.

- If we get a wyvern (not counting Swiftwings, who would technically count as one) they’ll probably be a Shadow breed. Why? This is the home of Nocturnes, who are known by the community to resemble wyverns the closest. They even support themselves with their wings when walking. If they choose to follow the same path as Gaolers, then it makes sense that the wyvern-like breed would be the closest related to a Nocturne.

So what are your theories? I’d love to see them.

Oooh... Personally, I think the insectlike/chitinous breed is gonna end up being Arcane as some sort of gangly proto-Fae. I'd love a really buggy/alien-lookin breed!

I was thinking about this in the Wind forums, but I think we're gonna either get a Supernoodle (perhaps like a lindwurm or ampithere?), or some sort of vaguely terrifying proto-Skydancer. Who knows!

Also of note: "Not all ancient dragons were created by the elemental gods—others sprang forth from pure coagulated magic, owing no allegiance at all."

So while I think each flight will get at least one ancient breed, it seems like there'll be several that don't have a flight at all! Where will they come from, I wonder...?

I agree with the Swiftwings theory. Also, since the genes can break the lineart, I’m hoping that there will be a gene/breed with multiple heads, like a hydra.

I kinda want a fish-looking dragon for water. Sure, there a guardians, but I'm talking like Beta-fish frilly lookin' things.

There was a time he thought a single
sword could save the kingdom. A
time, all regrets were yet far away...
I'm definitely excited to see what kind of ancient dragon Shadow will be getting. I think it's likely that it might be somewhat bioluminescent, because it sounds like most of these are coming from underground. (The exceptions being Water, possibly Plague and possibly Fire.*) They'd need some way to see and if they truly are going to be Nocturne-like, they might mimic things as well. And what does Shadow have an abundance of? Glowy mushrooms. *I think it's possible that the Fire ancients could be lava dwellers and it would be so cool if the Plague ancients came from the Wyrmwound. As for Water, that's kind of self-explanatory. To support the Plague theory:
The Wyrmwound A veritable cauldron of disease, churned by the Plaguebringer herself, to design and release experimental strains of never-ending calamity. Even the dragons who settle along the crater's edge stay clear of this pustule lake, wary that any contact could wipe them out, or turn them into something monstrous.
These ancients are sounding pretty monstrous to me. As for Fire:
Blacksand Annex This obsidian coastline is blanketed in flowing lava and a scalding steam-mist at the water's edge. The land is fluid and soft: an open canvas - unmolded clay needing a crafter's hand. The Annex beckons to those flights eager to make a lasting impression on the landscape and thus to cement their places by the Flamecaller's side. However, this builder's paradise is marred by inexplicable events and dreadful shapes moving deep in the pervasive mist.
Inexplicable like what happened in Earth's bit of BotE? Can't wait to see what kind of heat-resistant dergs we might be getting. Whatever happens, I'm hyped for these ancients and I'm eagerly awaiting June 8th.

Aren't there going to be flight-neutral ones? I didn't read the whole thing, but I was told there'll be flight-neutral ones.

@GardenSnail Yes, I think there will be eventually.
Many of these archaic creatures were crafted by the gods when they first began to vie for territory. Hastily designed, these creations were needed to carve the land into distinct realms, and remain very different from one another to this day. Not all ancient dragons were created by the elemental gods—others sprang forth from pure coagulated magic, owing no allegiance at all.
[s]Ancient Bogsneaks?[/s]

I'm definitely betting on a Leviathan-type for water. Terrifying sea creature bls!

Serpents for water or wind is a definite possibility, or even a amphithere for wind or light.

For fire, maybe a more phoenix-like one? Since Coatls are all feathery.

Can totally see the first wyverns being a predecessor to Nocturnes.

I think the insect-like ones are either Arcane or Lightning.

And hmm, I wonder what kind we'd get for flightless. I'm thinking the hydra-type? Maybe even drakes, though I wouldn't be surprised if the drakes ended up being an Earth type dragon, considering they don't need wings much.

My predictions:

We will get dragons based on the non- Flight elemental Runes in Runestones of the Archanist. That is:
Blood
Chaos
Cloud
Time
Life
Metal
Mind
Pillar
Spirit
Truth
Venom

The entity causing disappearances at the dig in Dragonhome is an ancient breed.

The ancient breed returning with The Tidelord will have a leviathan-like appearance.

On the Flight Rising anaversery, we will each receive two ancient breed eggs.

A radioactive breed will result from the current plague-nature war

If we get Swiftwing dragons I am going to cry tears of joy.
