What are the in-universe reasons for why ancient dragons can't wear apparel?
I headcanon it is because Dragonhome's tailors refuse to serve them because ancient dragons don't understand any of the following:
- modern draconic language
- waiting patiently in line for other customers to go first
- money
- really, the whole concept of a store to begin with

This, kinda. I imagine that during the time they were around, clothes weren't a thing for them so they see this new foreign culture as strange and want nothing to do with it. Perhaps they also associate wearing clothes as something only beastclans do, so many ancient dragons also see it as primitive.

From what I've read, the Ancient dragons only existed to carve the initial territory for their deities (if they had deities), so the finer minutiae of social graces probably never crossed their minds.

In all serious headcanon, perhaps they value remaining in their natural form, 'as their deity intended' and aren't very keen on change...Especially if they've been holed up somewhere (like gaolers, though that could actually be Icewarden's choice rather than their own). They have got no one to impress and perhaps modern dragon culture is of no concern to them. Inversely, perhaps it is ancient dragon culture that dictates wearing clothes as unnecessary, or beneath them? Maybe they just aesthetically prefer to look 'wild'.
I'd imagine at this point, most are currently hidden, or in a hibernal state like the gods were, until the gods decide they have need for them again. But I guess we don't really know until the staff get around the releasing them what the true reason is.

Didn't they say something in the announcement about clothes being uncomfortable for ancient dragons? Because they aren't used to wearing them.
