We all know how tedious it is to farm for those [censored for hatchlings]ing delicate bat wings; yours truly, Sertified Jenious that she is, came up with a foolproof plan* to minimize the hassle. To wit**, that I would grind for as long as it took each day to get one wing, break until tomorrow, and then search out another single bat wing. I would make progress each day, while still giving myself a sanity-saving limit of sorts. With the five wings I already had, I would finish that infernal hibernal quest within two weeks.

The drawbacks of consecutive heavy-duty Colosseuming soon began to be apparent. By the conclusion of the second or third hunt, my right hand ached something fierce. When I logged in the day afterward, it quickly began hurting again. I decided that taking a wing-hunting break was the better part of valor. After all, I didn't want to end up with crippling carpal-tunnel syndrome by Greenskeeper Gathering.

After a small abstention, my wrist seemed a bit better. I winged another wing from Woodland Path, and then spent some time frantically active in Woodland Path and Waterway, because I was about halfway done with gathering the swap materials for a sunlit kelpie's mane, and it seemed a shame to not finish it up-- what if Swipp offered a mane the next day? And besides, it was online D&D night, and I need something fairly mindless to do with my hands while I'm listening. What do you want me to do, pay attention with my hands folded on my lap?***

This was yet another bad call. New resolution: no Coliseum at all until GG.

It has been, oh, maybe a week since then? My right hand is still tingly and sore. My left hand is also hurting for no discernible reason (perhaps in solidarity?) And the rapid clicking involved in Glimmer & Gloom appears to be further exasperating the problem.

My newest, shiniest plan of action is to temporarily quit Glimmer & Gloom, too. Maybe, in this way, I will be back up to fighting strength in time for the festival. Or maybe my hands will drop off unless I forswear the Internet altogether. I suppose the smart thing to do would be to take a week off the computer anyway, but... Internet!

The obvious conclusion that can be taken away from my sorry experience is
the importance of not letting one's health suffer while gaming

"[censored for hatchlings] DELICATE BAT WINGS!"

* "Foolproof" here defined as "proof against any external sources of foolishness".
** So to speak.
*** To paraphrase Order of the Stick, I am one of those players for whom the letters "AD&D" mean "attention deficit disorder".

While easing off of the internet is definitely the main suggestion... might want to invest in some wrist braces. If it gets persistent, might want to check up with a doctor. I've got carpal tunnel myself and it's saved me a lot of pain. Taking breaks and doing wrist stretches is also a good idea, but that's a good idea for all gaming/computering.

Take it from someone who had to do six months of physical therapy because of basically exactly this - you don't want to let it get to that point. Take frequent breaks (I mean every hour, at least), and follow these exercises during at least some of your breaks. Building good habits is key to avoiding repetitive stress injuries - going back to old habits after taking a break will very quickly undo all of the good the break did you.

did Atropos even know you had a name?
or when she'd cut the line, that it would leave half my tale untold?

how could you leave half a tale untold?
I just want to say that you have a really pleasant-to-read type of narration and writing that's both engaging and witty, but oh gosh, please take care of your hands! I've gotten random wrist pains from coli or drawing too much before and the prospect of permanent damage is actually kinda terrifying ;;

I'd advise on accumulating currency a bit more slowly and just buying the remaining wings off the AH...?

Still don't have the faintest as to what I did to get my left hand all sore, though).

@justherefortheRo

Do you use your left hand for keybinds in the Coli? Because just the repetitive motions and how you hold your hand on the keyboard can be harmful as well.

As a highly qualified doctor, I would concur that you have indeed "internetted" too hard.
I hope your hands can heal soon!
