Lore Question: What kind of traditions do your clans have around death?

I personally like the very weird idea that dragons keep the hides of their loved ones. Lovingly tanned and maintained, perhaps made into special garments or armor, or simply hung on the wall above a little shrine kept in their memory.

This could also apply to bones if that's all that's left of the deceased.

Back in the very, very early days, someone in Wind shared their lore on this, which others were free to copy.
After reading it I was very much moved, and as such, I did copy it, and it has been in my clan description ever since.

"Like many windies, this clan participates in the chime ritual.
A chandelier with chimes is present in this clan. Each chime represents a dragon, and the way they are placed around each other shows genealogy. Children's chimes hand from their parents. Mated pairs are attached by a string with a scale from each of them in between. The chime for a deceased dragon is silenced by putting a cloth around it, and when that dragon is missed, the cloth can be removed for a short time by someone who wants to hear their chime again for a while."

Use their remains in every way possible. Don't want anything you could profit from to go to waste. From food to jewelry, everything has a function. This also would negate that Emperor issue! No body, no abomination!

Thrown into The Great Furnace to see if they would be once more reforged into a new weapon to serve the Flamecaller.

@Foxofwonders - that's wonderful. Do we have any idea who came up with it?

In my clan, after a proper funeral ceremony and the friends and family of the dragon in question say what kind words and memories they have of the dragon, they have 3 options for what to do with the body:

1. The dead dragon gets buried at the bottom of the ocean under the sand so that their bodies contribute to the environment, with their bones being like framework for coral to grow on and for fish and other sea life to live beside to have cover.

2. They can have their body stay preserved with magic that keeps them from decomposing in a deep sea cave which is basically a tomb where dead dragons are kept in caskets with one glass wall so you can see you loved one, where they look like they're just sleeping.

3. The final option where the dead dragon can be turned to seafoam so that they can forever be within the ocean and that their family can be beside them when they swim in the ocean.

The dragon will decide which option they want and will have it written in their will and the undertaker will, with the funeral procession, put them to rest. The undertaker is skilled in burying the dragon, foaming them, or casting a preserving spell on them depending on what the dragon wants :)

Actually, the hide concept isn't far off from my lore - my clan will salvage all that they can of a deceased dragon, may those be bones, their hide, their teeth or claws, or even mummification via freezing. Regardless of what or how much, their remains are cherished dearly by the clan and protected, located in an area of the clan territory reserved for those that have passed.

Perhaps it is morbid, but to the clan, it is considered honourable.

I don't really have any thought to it but I was around for the wind chime idea in Wind and it might be utilized, at least in some aspect, in the future provided I don't forget about it again

Most if the dragons in my clan come from different backgrounds/clans but for the most part it's a 'hold them in your hearts and nowhere else, publicly' sort of deal. Some keep little relics but not much else.

Spyrvskha has a map of everywhere that he's died, with little pins on it if that counts.

Memory just. Remembers them. I mean, it's his job. Why wouldn't you let him.
