does anyone else find it hard to make friends on here? most people are very polite and friendly and generous with compliments but it feels like thats all anyone is? my attempts at trying to actually be proper friends with people here never seem to go very far, like people are nice but no one is personable. by comparison, even on neopets, i had made good friends there very quickly and even met several people from there irl. i feel like its because on neopets people respond to other users a lot more on the neoboards, and are much quicker to go to DMs and start talking about their personal life, and people were much less.... "surface friendly" there, for lack of a better term. like on neo if someone was acting friendly it was because they want to be friends, but on here its more like people act friendly to be polite. everyone on my friends list is just random friend requests ive accepted- im not friends with any of my "friends" unless i already knew them from another site. i would think this was just a "me" thing but i read someone say offsite once that theyve found it impossible to make friends here too.

so whats your experience with this? do you know what i mean or have you made good/real friends on fr? to be clear this isnt me saying i want a bunch of DMs or friend requests from random people lol i dont think thats a good way to make friends either

Pretty much everyone I'm friends with on FR I talk to via Discord, and I suspect that's the same for a lot of people.

FR has an older average population than somewhere like neopets, and that tends to lead to less jumping in to make friends until you've chatted more... which is easier off forums.

My advice would be to join a discord server and pursue friendships there! You're right, the forums here are have a veneer of positivity and friendship with rather little real substance. Discord servers (from my experience) tend to be way more tight knit and you're able to talk about pretty much anything and vent about stuff there which results in closer friendships.

I think Neopets had fewer offsite options (especially since you couldn't link/mention offsite things there), so the boards and guilds were the only way that people communicated regularly. Since FR is cool with offsite stuff, Discord and tumblr are where the social userbase hangs out imo.

I have the same as Vendrus. For the past 5 years I had the same issue, it's hard to approach people unless you're super social. I hardly had any friends I interacted with those years.

Then I joined some discord last year, and now I actually have friends. Which is an utter miracle. Discord really is the way to go if you want to make friends or just straight up have people to talk to.

i just find it easier to make friends on platforms where u can be aware of someone's online presence, and there's direct contact to follow after i guess. cant describe this really properly, im v tired as of the time i post this. but yeah, discord's a part f those platforms. it's also worked for aj before, to some extent too.

i'm not good at discord lol. theres always too many people. i like smaller groups. its fine, i'm not super bothered by my lack of fr friends, its just a bit of a bummer.

What you said about Neopets is so, so true! Sadly, all my friends stopped playing it :( i log in everyday to do dailies/Lab but that's about it.. I really miss the golden days of Neopets.

I have friendly connections, but I wouldn't really call any of them my friends. like we're there for each other but we don't have any sort of intimacy for a friendship. (except one or two who I know irl)

I'll rehearse the general theme here. I think everyone here is willing to be friends, but while the DM and Forum systems are great, they aren't designed for making stronger connections. I generally use the friend system to keep track of my irl friends and people I've met here who are exceptionally kind. I'm always willing to chat in the DM system, but I rarely initiate conversation on here because it clogs up your message board fast. (The forums are a bit too public for one on one chats.)

Discord is definitely the first place to look, but I've also had some success on Tumblr. I'm currently very active on an FR Telegram group which you can find in my signature, and if you have Telegram, I highly recommend it. We've got a great group of people, and we're a very friendly bunch!

In my experience, it's near impossible to make friends on FR. You'd need to go offsite to make friends. Discord, Slack, Tumblr, etc. are all good options!

I'm not going to go into a rant about my social life here, but let's just say I've tried a lot of different on-site and off-site methods, to no avail. Could just be me, though. I just try to be nice to people now.
