they were only available for a week (?) , and in my opinion they're one of the cooler looking familars.

I would think so too, but I guess people must have gotten an abundance of them expecting such and therefore over-flooded the market.

I think a lot of people made many of them anticipating they would be valuable. They are really cool! But they aren't nearly as hard to come by as, say, a sprite which there may only be a small handful of because of how few players there were to start with.
Maybe when a few years pass and there's way more people on the site that didn't get a chance to make their own they'll be worth something. Personally I have at least 8 of the things. Not that exciting.

I don't remember exactly, but I'm going to guess that there wasn't anything else limited-time to brew, and people made a bunch knowing they would be retired. I know I did. And yeah, I was kind of surprised too when I checked them on the AH the other day.

I made a bunch to give away to newbies, but I still have them in my vault. I will hoard them until they go up in price, like the scattersight vials.

I expect many people brewed a lot of them in case they became valuable, so the prices will probably stay pretty high until the surplus sells off.
