I've been collecting a lot of Gen1s lately, and I frequently see auctions or even flat sales for dragons going for 40k gems and up.
Given than $100 will buy you 11,500 gems directly, I'm amazed by people who can save up literally tens of thousands of gems.
And to be clear I don't have a problem making reasonable numbers of gems, I'm just floored that there are enough buyers with ten of thousands of gems out there to sustain dragons at these prices on a not-irregular basis.
You'd think that those types of prices would be reserved to very special collector items, but I see it all the time.

Accents. Currency swapping (buying gems low, selling them high). Coli. Playing the market. Having retiring items, like sprites, and selling them.

@ScalyMaiden
Well, that, and some people are absolutely spending lots of cash. Unless someone tells you they are spending cash though, it can be hard to tell.
Also, there are some people who have accumulated valuable things on pet sites that existed well before Flight Rising; then those players have traded for things here.

Also some people are artists and can received great amount of gems for one piece or they can make a lot of money while selling a lot of art to people who would by them for a reasonable price, but the sum of it will be great

I'm a filthy dragon capitalist. Or game capitalist. Every game I touch I become filthy rich because I sell all the things. I find comfort in tedious tasks.. others often don't like tedious tasks, so they buy my tedious task items. I gather materials, craft them into items etc. I'm a ferengi lol accumulation of wealth makes me happy.
In real life I am broke because it's a lot harder to mine ores and craft things. Lol

I saw someone buy a gilded crown for pure 145kg. Ive also seen people save tens of thousands of gems, and not even spend a dime. While I'm over here with a single gem, and 100kt. xD

wow this is me
maybe not here so much, but...
my biggest source of income is normally fest currency and apparel. whether it's trading currency for items I want, selling the fest apparel en masse right after the fest, selling pure currency, or just getting rid of all the food/familiars/junk loot I picked up in the Coli, i normally make a decent profit depending in how much time i threw into the coli. i think my best is a good 800g off apparel alone, last starfall.

Well, treasure is pretty easy to earn between flipping fodder, playing g&g and doing coli. It's also easy enough to convert treasure to gems, so I can usually exchange for about 2-3kg per week.

Just lots of patience and knowing how to read the market helps me out in getting items. But I'm also selling sprites so the money accumulates pretty fast with patience. G&G helps a lot!
