the lil preview of them in the familiar box might trick us into believing that they're all dog-sized pets when in reality they could be massive, I mean there's yetis and griffins haha

It's hard to tell because few fams actually give an idea of what their sizes are. I would start with compiling familiars we know the size of, and then working from there.
The only two fams I can remember that actually have a size are

i put orcas on this to get a decent idea of the size of my wildclaw's hunting partner relative to him, a human, and a real orca
