TOPIC | So I have this this idea
1 2
I've had this idea for a petsim kicking around in my head for a while now and I want yall's opinion on it.

It's called Cross, and as I'm working it out right now, it's a breeding sim that focuses on mutating crossbreeding to get increasingly fantastic creatures. This Idea came to me largely because most mythical creatures are just wacky hybrids of normal animals.

You have your base creatures, your cats, dogs, and horses, which you (possibly with the help of an item) crossbreed to produce a hybrid. These hybrids can then be further bred to either base or other hybrid creatures get yet more unique creatures.

Example: Lion+Bird=Gryphon then Gryphon+Horse=Hippogriff

Base creatures can be mutated for certain looks and these mutations can change the outcome of a breeding.

Example: Lizard+Fish=Water Dragon, but if you turn that lizard into snake (by removing its legs) then Snake+Fish=Sea Serpent

Then there are creatures that don't even require breeding, only mutation. The Tatzelwurm can be created by removing the back legs of a cat and doing the same thing to a dragon can turn them into a Lindwyrm.

The biggest issue with this idea that I'm seeing is apparel and genes, even with only a few creatures, the sheer number of possibilities would make an unreasonable amount of artwork needed to allow them all to have shared genes and apparel.

The answer to this, in my mind, would be skins that could be passed down as apposed to randomized genes and allowing the community to make customs (that could also be passed down).

For apparel I would allow the community to also make their own because official apparel would be scarce given it would take a lot of work for a single set to fit properly on every base and hybrid.

What do you guys think?

Sounds really cool to me!

To get around these problems here at FR, I know that they use a program to quickly create all the colors necessary for each gene set and dragon base. Otherwise the task would be herculean. And even then... :""D

@Watchword

Yeah :')

I feel for the artists tasked with genes and apparel, it has to be the most tedious things to work on.

i say heck it with genes and apparel, you'll get plenty customisation mutating your pets : D

This sounds really cool! o.o
It also sounds like you've got ideas that would keep the community involved in everything, which seems really nice.

There's a couple of things of note.

1. You would have to be careful, as art development could be a herculean task if the game gets too detailed, too fast.

2. One major issue that plagues games like these, is an elite cadre of players forming into their own self-styled clique, which ends up cartelising the top end of the game. They could potentially end up totally owning the guaranteed breeding of certain genesets, and charge enormous amounts of in-game, or real money for them - I'm speaking about genesets that are extremely hard or time consuming to breed.

As an example, imagine if a gene on a dragon went to 10 players in the game only, and the only way to get the genes is a 1/1000 chance on breeding, or by buying a dragon with the gene in place. Sure, the genes would spread naturally, but if those 10 people banded together in a cartel, and charged say 20 million each for a dragon with the genes, no one, bar the game moderators would be able to stop them.

3. The more potential mutation there is, the more complex the game becomes, and the more intimidating the game becomes to new players.

I always wanted to see a game created like that, but the biggest issue as others have stated is how much time you would have to work on it and find someone who would take the time to draw each and every creature and markings. That would take a ton of effort and programming with breeding as well or mutating.

Also newbs would be confused easily so you would have to give a very clean and understanding tutorial on
mutating and items etc.

You can also do updates along the way, but you'd have to make sure to start with a good enough variety.

@Jimmy2016

You bring up some good points.

I was thinking Cross could take after FR in how it does its premium currency and allow players to obtain it in-game here and there. This way if there are players who can't afford to drop money into the game to get the shiny new whatsit that's been released they can still buy it eventually.

Some mutations, skins, and creatures will be rare, but that rarity will effect the breeding, meaning a handful of players will have a harder time get together with their breeding pairs of Starry Winged Kirins and dangle their offspring over the heads of other players because Kirin, due to their rarity, only have a slim chance of producing other Kirin and and even slimmer chance of them being both Starry and Winged due to the rarity of the skin and mutation.

As far as the development, creatures and possible hybrids might be developed and come out one at a time not unlike dragon breeds so that (official) skins and whatever (official) apparel there is can be up to date with the new creatures right out of the gate. I imagine with the possibilities of the already available creatures would hold the interest of players long enough to get the next creature out.

I would hope to keep the game easy to understand through its interface and and a detailed "help" section.

@Skywatcher

Yeah, I would have to find artist(s)/coder(s) who were really sold on the idea of Cross to make it work and I doubt I could find any who would be willing to jump into, what would largely be, a labor of love.

:')
