TOPIC | What kind of pets do you want?

I have so many pets I want to own. I never got a cat because my mom is allergic so that's one I really want. Also basically any reptile, amphibian or insect lol. What's a pet you've always wanted? (tips on pet care is always encouraged)

I wanna get a cat. I used to have two, but one passed away last year and the other one earlier this year, both due to old age combined with stress/sickness, and it feels weird not having one around anymore after having them for so long (16 and 10 years respectively, to be exact). So yeah, I definitely wanna get another one at some point in my life.

Kinda also wanna get rats again (used to have a few) 'cause they're cool & I can just dump leftover food and old useless clothes into their cage for them to eat and build their little nests with. They're really handy.

An insect of some sort would be cool too tbh, but I think most of them would be too high-maintenance for me to handle right now.

I want a hedgehog, mostly because they are my favorite animal, but sadly I don't think they are legal where I live...
I've always wanted a bird, though!

If it was possible for me to legally keep a happy pet vulture, I'd do it, but that's more of a fantasy than anything lol.

I also really want a giant rainforest mantis (Hierodula majuscula), but I haven't found anywhere trustworthy I can buy one. I already keep a giant Asian mantis, a closely related species, and he's the best.

Also on my list of consideration: leopard geckos, Florida ivory millipedes, tarantulas, hamsters, and ferrets. I love taking care of pets, and the research phase is practically my favorite part. Here are some miscellaneous tips:

-Goldfish are famous for only living a week, but that's because most people keep them in unfiltered bowls. With a proper aquarium and filter, some breeds of goldfish can live as long as forty years!

-Cats should always be kept indoors. It's been estimated that outdoor cats have caused or significantly contributed to the extinctions of more than thirty species of bird alone, and many millions of cats are killed by cars, poison, or disease transmitted by other outdoor cats or wild animals. Taking an animal native to Africa and Asia, selectively breeding it for thousands of generations to be good at killing things, and then letting it loose around the world is just as unnatural as setting Burmese pythons loose in the Everglades.

-Bathing ferrets does not reduce their odor. Giving a ferret a bath strips it of the natural oils of its skin, causing it to produce even more of them and contributing to a stronger smell.

-The majority of commercially available hamster cages are too small and can damage the hamster's teeth when it tries to chew on it. The best housing option for your money are large plastic storage units and custom built cages.

-If you're feeding tarantulas, centipedes, mantids, or other carnivorous invertebrates, crickets are actually a really bad option. They'll work in a pinch, but their cannibalistic nature means that if a single cricket succumbs to a disease or parasite, every other cricket in the group will, too. They also have the potential to eat your pet if you aren't careful.

-Crested geckos should not be fed baby food, and if you give them fresh fruit care must be taken to ensure they have an adequate Ca:P ratio so as not to lead to a calcium deficiency. Although they seem expensive, a single container of Repashy or Pangea brand gecko food will last half a year, meaning it only costs $40 a year to feed a single crested gecko!

Animal care and captivity is my favorite subject ever, and I spend nearly all my time learning everything I can about it. Those were just a few random tidbits of information I had been thinking about lately. ^-^

I want axolotl. <3

But now I'm stuck here with 5 snails. Yeah, I have snails. They are cute. They eat a lot.... that's it, nothing more.

I have a leopard gecko, hoping to get another. But the pet I REALLY want is a cat. Unfortunately I can't get one, as I technically live in a no-pets building, and if anyone sees that I have a pet, my family will be fined $200 per week...
I grew up with two cats, and I've always loved cats. I hope one day I'll be able to get another, because really, cats are my childhood.

*coughing grunt* back in my day, I didn't have Flight Rising to entertain me, all I had was cats and a laser light, and I turned out fine...
