I really want to find some artists I haven't heard of, especially if they're from a country where the pop culture doesn't reach the US or Japan easily, so rec any songs that:

- preferably aren't in English (unless it's not the artist's native language) or Japanese
- aren't by artists who are known in the US or Japan
- are not by an idol group after the 90s

Genre doesn't really matter, but I like upbeat music!
Here's my work playlist, if you want to see what I've been listening to c:

EDIT: No need to ping me, I'm subscribed to the thread!

EDIT 2: In the 6 or so years since I posted this, I've stopped using the linked YouTube playlist and have instead been using this Spotify playlist. It's very long, not in any particular order, and probably reveals more about me than I'd like.

im on mobile and at a friend's dormroom so not bothered to mess w links but
gonna list some artists/bands (gonna list noninstrumental ones for now l o l)

- synecdoche montauk. russian stuff. they've got a quiet stream of new stuff coming out this year. the 2nd part of the mmxvii thing coming out soon, i guess. also savva rozanov has a nice voice.
(bonus: some songs off moa pillar's roraima album where it's also savva singing. the rest of moa pillar's stuff is p much instrumental. dude's also counted as the Sneaky Fourth Member of synecdoche montauk on their vk page at least)
- lovozero. also russian stuff. see also: tikhie kamni (collab between lvzr + moa. some instru, some w lvzr's vocals)
- kate nv. russian stuff, tho sings in either english or gibberish or somewhere inbetween. see also: glintshake (or cyrillic letters g + sh. why does fr formatting hate special symbols. anyway kate nv is part of it. tho havent listened to their stuff much, but their songs should be in russian as far as im aware)
- kedr livanskiy. russian stuff. she's apparently got a new album coming out this week.
- samaris. icelandic + english stuff (tho i haven't listened to their english stuff yet). see also: pascal pinon (project by one member of samaris + her twin mainly)
- úlfur úlfur. icelandic stuff. not to be confused by just úlfur (hansson), altho also icelandic stuff, but different icelandic stuff.
- vaiko eplik. estonian stuff, he sings exclusively in estonian (sans the stuff as claire's birthday). he's got some nice stuff.
- jarek kasar aka chalice (not to be confused by several different chalices, although this chalice easily differentiable by estonian song names). he's got nice stuff too.

I like The Slot. Russian rock group. Have a best of album in English but otherwise all their songs are in Russian.

I really like Chisu, a Finnish artist. I wouldn't say she's particularly up beat in some songs, but she has a really nice voice and Finnish is generally pretty beautiful, so.

UK time. Sorry for timezone-related delays in responses. They/Them.
@Matou Wow, Caravan Palace has such neat music videos! I've heard Stromae once before, but now I regret not looking into his music more because he has some really cool songs. Thank you!

@sneekiblin I have very little Russian music and no Icelandic or Estonian music, so these are all totally new to me. Thanks!! (and re: using other characters on Flight Rising, I KNOW, RIGHT??)

@Pheonyx Oh my gosh I love it.

@Greyjoy Her voice is so nice! I really like Kohtalon oma, this is exactly the kind of music I was looking for, thank you c:

Not sure if this fits in the category, but KKB (Kero Kero Bonito)??
The majority of their songs are English, but some of them also have Japanese lyrics in them (since the person who sings is english and japanese)
I'm not sure if they're popular yet, but I've seen a few people reference their songs (I'm looking at you, Siivagunner.)

My best guess it to try the Eurovision songs, it's were I found some of my non-english songs. everything else I listen too is mostly Japanese. I've also got some songs by non-famous bands but they're English and mostly rock and alternative.

Alex Swings Oscar Sings- Muchacha Kiss Kiss Bang (Spanish)
T.A.T.U. is a Russian duo I have some songs from and they have Russian versions of some of their songs like Ya Soshla S Uma and Nas Ne Dagoniat
Sonohra-L'amore (Italian)
Piero Pelu-Amore Immaginato (Italian)
Luca Dirisio-Calma e sangue freddo (Italian)
Kalomoira-Secret Combination, was the Greek entry into Eurvision one year but it's in English
ItaloBrothers (actually German)
Fabri Fibra-Italian rap artist
Gianna Nannini (Italian)
David Bisbal-Besos de tu Boca (Spanish)
Angelique Kidjo
Alexander Rybak

Zeljko Joksimovic is my go-to guy if I have to recommend singers from the ex-Yugo region. He's almost a regular in Eurovision, participating a few times with this song being my favorite.

I also listen to a lot of Russian music though I don't really know much about singers since I'm more of a type that is a 'fan' of particular songs than being unconditionally faithful to the artists who sing them. My recommendation would be Aleksander Panayotov, who was the runner up of last season of Golos (Russian singing contest).

If you wouldn't mind watching singing contest, then you can watch Golos from their official youtube channel. At the moment they're running the audition stage for the sixth season so it's going to be a few more weeks until the real good stuffs will happen in the show.

Oh, and make sure to check out Pelageya who's also a judge in Golos this year. She's normally singing some kind of a mix of folk-rock.

Not sure if you like medieval rock or folk metal, which is popular in europe, and mostly have non-english lyrics.

Korpiklaani is a great finish band, obviously with finish singing in most songs.

One of my favorite bands from Sweden is Falconer. They definitively deserve more attention. The singer has such a beautiful voice.

And Schandmaul, a good example from Germany.
