Non-spoiler stuff:

I was disappointed, tbh. I knew going into it that it was going to be more like the new movies and so would have a ton of (imo) pointless action sequences and little dialogue but I'd still hoped for something more along the lines of TNG or DS9. I'm hoping that after the action of the first two episodes (the Space channel in Canada showed the first two episodes tonight instead of just the one!) things will be toned down a bit.

I was also disappointed with the overly futuristic design of the sets. Again, I knew things were going to be more like the J.J. Abrams movies because of the trailers but I was still hopeful. :p I feel like Star Trek should try to find a middle ground between the low budgets of the older shows (so many recycled shots, tiny sets, etc.) and the super futuristic sets, effects, etc. from the new movies. What I love about classic Trek is the debate. I love the discussion of ethics, the shades of gray and all that. I know the new series is supposed to be focused on that but the action of the first two episodes was off-putting for me.

That being said, I was more interested in the characters of Discovery than I was in some of the characters of classic Trek. I mean, I really didn't care for Voyager's first two episodes, TNG's were basically a joke and DS9 was okay but the characters were very stiff and uncomfortable. I grew to care about them as the series progressed but their stories were more interesting than Discovery's.

I'm really looking forward to next week's episode but I'm crossing my fingers that things will be toned down. I'm really not into the heavy special effects and action sequences. I suppose that's just personal preference and I'm probably in the minority but what I love about Star Trek is the debate and dialogue, not the special effects and action. I feel that when action is overdone it loses meaning. Though low budget, the explosions from classic Trek were usually gut-wrenching. It felt ... big. Important. Explosions going off every 30 seconds gets kind of boring. You become numb to it. At least, that's my experience.

Spoilers!

I am really interested in learning more about the albino Klingon though! I feel like he's THE Albino from DS9's "Blood Oath." Klingons can live to be 200 or so so it would fit in the timeline. I can see the albino from Discovery being angry with the Klingons becoming more friendly with the Federation and "losing their individuality" and becoming The Albino that was hunted by Kor, Koloth, Kang and Curzon/Jadzia Dax. I think that would be really cool and now I'm kind of crossing my fingers that those Klingons and especially Dax show up later. Dax is one of my favourite Star Trek characters so I would be over the moon if that happened, lol. It's far too early for Curzon though, unless Trill live longer than humans and I don't think that's ever been established.

I can't wait to find out how Michael gets out of jail too of course. She HAS to, I'm just wondering how she'll do it. I suspect Sarek will show up and debate with the Federation council to convince them to let her out.

Gonna keep this spoiler free. I really liked it! I have never really been a Trekkie, however I've always appreciated how cool the franchise looks and saw this show as an opportunity to get into it!

I'm gonna have to shell out money to get CBS All Access now, which is my only big issue about the show. I get the feeling that CBS is making this great show only to get more subscribers to their service, but I could be wrong.

But yeah, cool characters! Looks like a promising series to me.

@Capitalism

I do think the characters are cool, I'm just really not into action-heavy stuff. I find the characters pretty compelling though. Just hoping the action will be toned down a bit and used for more impact! If there's too much action it has little impact.

I'm in Canada so we don't have CBS All Access. It's airing on the Space channel for the first season and then I think it's moving to something else but I'm not sure what. D: It should just be on regular TV though... I'm so tired of all these new services popping up! Everyone's trying to compete with things like Netflix so what should've been a one-stop shop for all kinds of awesome shows has turned into a ton of little similar streaming services with less content. .__.'

@SquidQueen

Do have to agree, the action was a bit overwhelming especially for the first episode. And that's coming from someone who does like action!

Yeah same, I'm quickly getting fed up with the new services! it's getting very annoying and not everyone is gonna be able to afford a whole bunch of subscriptions at once. I checked out All Access right now and lots of the content on there was the same as Netflix, so I really don't want to pay for a whole service if I'm just going to watch one or two shows. I'm planning on binging the first season once the whole thing is out next January on a 1 week free trial, but it will be a rough 4 months of enduring constant spoilers about whats happening. After that's done I have no clue about how I'm gonna watch season 2 without dodging some legal stuff and just torrenting the darn thing.

Eh. First Trek season is always one of the worst, and this is set to be the worst of the first seasons due to executive meddling (a Trek hallmark by now) and a showrunner quitting a year ago. Sure does like to contradict the established lore though...

I'll watch it on Netflix after I'm done with DS9 and VOY. Debating on ENT and the animated shows.

My writing project.
I really want to see it! But in the Netherlands it isn’t yet on Netflix, although there stands on Netflix that Discovery is available on 25 September, which is today...

Edit: It is on Netflix, apparently it doesn’t show up on my phone, but only on my laptop.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The characters were pretty compelling , Michael's definitely an interesting one and I really want to know more about her and her past.

Honestly I didn't think the action and special effects were too much.That might just be because I love action, I do hope it's more focused on dialogue and character development overall though.

It absolutely feels completely different from the past Star Trek shows but I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily. I'm interested to see where it goes, even if it might not be what people were expecting or wanted. It's also great to see women of colour as the leads! Although Philippa dying in the second episode, ouch that hurt my heart.

I'm actually enjoying Discovery a lot more now than I was initially - the latest episode (the one with the planet with the sparkly beings) had the kind of star trek feeling I was wanting. I'm glad it's getting better :D

The recent couple of episodes going into the parallel universe feels like a filler to me, the actual storyline seems sidelined. Also Saru seems very interesting to me, the guy that plays him is a great actor, he has liked a few of my replies on twitter. Yeah I'm boasting :P in all seriousness, glad that storyline is over with.
