TOPIC | Help with halloween costume please?
So for Halloween I want to dress as a plague doctor! Problem is I have little idea on how to make it all look good since I never really care how I look beyond decent normally. So my main concern is how to make the whole costume blend together well. Along with this, any ideas and tips for dressing up or getting the stuff for it. A place where I can look up info about this would also help too.

As for what I currently have to perhaps use for it, I have black leather gloves, black costume boots, and a black leather organization 13(kingdom hearts) coat.

Edit: Forgot to add some details, also added pictures to what they exactly or almost exactly look like.

@weretiger5411 I love plague doctors! You would definitely need the mask, that's what defines a plague doctor. The strange hats are also pretty important, unless you want people to see your hair. I remember something about plague doctors having canes, but even if they didn't have 'em it would still look pretty rad.

If I were to dress as a plague doctor I would get a small bag or something and fill it with herbs. Plague doctors used to fill their masks with herbs to prevent sickness. Maybe the bag would represent extras? I dunno. Maybe i'd even take a small pack of medical supplies like bandages to make make it more doctor-like..

here's a wiki for plague doctors if you want

I don't know if i helped at all but i tried
I hope your costume turns out good

The key thing for this costume is going to be the mask. I see three options for that.

1. Make one yourself. A clay mold and some paper mache could do the trick. Definitely want to use an extra coat of glue over the top of the base, then dry it and paint it white. The only problem I can see there is that it might come out a bit lumpy, but it will be tailor made to your needs.

2. Buy one. See if your local party store has one (they all have their Halloween stash out this time of year). If not, scrounge around Amazon and see if you can find a decent one.

3. (What I would do) Modify an existing mask. Swing by Micheal's or JoAnn's or your local equivalent. They're bound to have some small plastic mask you can deck out, and unlike the party stores, this is a constant stock. They have them all year round. You don't have to figure out dimensions or do a bunch of measuring, it's all free-hand from then on. You could use the clay/paper trick noted above, but for this one, I'd do it by carving one out of foam. It would be lightweight and malleable, and would come out far less lumpy, plus it would be easier to attach. A flat-headed thumb tack could do the trick.

Whatever way you choose, just remember to use lots of reference material and non-toxic paint...trust me, you don't want to be wearing toxic paint on your face, if for no other reason than the smell. It's like having a Sharpie under your nose all night.

Also remember the entire costume should be comfortable! Don't support anything heavy on your head or force yourself to keep a constant position. It may seem obvious, but it's a very important thing that is often overlooked. The materials used should be lightweight and you should be able to maneuver easily in the entire gettup without having to pull pieces off. Little things like tight belts and high boots can be incredibly frustrating after just a few minutes of wearing them.

Hope this helps! Good luck on your costume!

@weretiger5411 Here's a tutorial/inspiration I like for the mask. You shouldn't have any trouble sourcing this stuff from a craft store, especially in October. All you really need is a plastic full-face mask, a styrofoam cone (the white kind, NOT the green floral foam), some paperclay or Crayola Model Magic, hot glue, paint, and a strap of elastic or ties for the back. Shouldn't cost you more than twenty bucks for that part. You'll also need a hat and some kind of cowl to cover your neck and hair. If you don't have the time or knowledge to sew something yourself, I would recommend hitting up thrift stores for a hat and a plain black hoodie you can cut up. Get a leather belt or two while you're there so you can hang some medical instruments of dubious origin- for creepy accessories you can get a little saw and a comically oversized "flavor injector" syringe from the dollar store. Your corpse pokin' stick can just be a wooden dowel painted a darker color. Good luck! @Doggopalooza @echothelatias @risforrose @Cynictis

Thank you for the tips! You guys definitely saved me the trouble of finding alternatives to the mask in case I don't have the money for it.

My main issue though(and I didn't highlight it so its my fault) is that I want my costume to blend well together well enough and wondering if I can do that with what I have. Like what parts I should try to get for this, any recommendations in general for a costume like this, should I try to get different parts then the ones I currently have, or is all of this something i'l have to do myself with trial and error? Don't worry if you ain't got a answer for all my questions(I understand i'm asking a lot), and this is still open to others who may have ideas too.

@weretiger5411 Again, thrift stores are your best friend, especially since they'll have all their Halloween stuff out right now- there are tons of robes and capes and accessories. Now that you've added pictures of the stuff you have, I think the gloves and boots will totally work, but if it were me I'd only use that coat as a last resort (it's nice! just not 100% ideal for this costume, I think). I might try something like a black graduation gown, or a plain black dress with long sleeves. Sometimes you have to think outside the box a little. I was actually trying to put together a plague doctor costume a couple years ago- you can see in this photo I'm using a gas mask instead of a beaked mask because I didn't like the way mine was turning out, but the dress and hat were both Goodwill finds, and I didn't really have to do anything else to them. I'd like to revisit the costume sometime now that I have more experience with sewing and modifying clothes, though.
