I've been an artist for a really long time, and I've always wanted to get into animation. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to get a professional program like Flash or something, and I don't know of any good free programs. I also don't want to invest money in something just to give it up a week later because it's frustrating for me. I don't know how to get started, and I could use some advice. Even just program recommendations or animation tips in general would be really nice :)

I haven't used it myself, but I hear OpenToonz is a very good free program, since it was based on a program that's professionally used.

As for advice, well, take my advice for a grain of salt since I'm just a high school animation student. The best thing is to plan and sketch out your animation before you jump into the details. My workflow is usually very rough storyboards -> rough animated sketches on every few frames -> more clean sketches on every frame -> final animation.

If you want to get into 3d animation, use blender.
It has all included and personally to an amateur artist, or to a indie developer, Blender is a good option, since it has 3d modeling tools, animation, video editor, sculpt tools like zbrush, and a good render engine (some terms Im using here may sound weird but once you get used to them, you'll understand)

the best thing is if you want to use it to biiger proects in future, you dont need to pay permisions to use blender, its totally free and awesome.

also, in there isa big amount of user in blender community that could help you, I know at first the software is weird, but after some tutorials you can hand over good results

Im not an animator, Im industrial designer, and 3d modeler, but since Im working with some vr projects, I have to involve into animation too (one of my greates passions)

Hi, I'm an amateur animator with a really time consuming but free process... Basically I draw my frames and upload them to a gif maker. It's... A pain, but it works!
