TOPIC | Art pet peeves?
1 2 3 4 5
Society often paints a picture that artists are always these free-flowing, whimsical people who are absolutely in love with everything art.

If you're an artist, you know that this is untrue about 90% of the time, and there are SO many things that drive us insane... so what are your pet peeves when it comes to making art?

Mine:
-Charcoal is death and I hate it with a burning passion. I went to art camp expecting to use a variety of materials to draw, but the teacher had us use charcoal every. single. ffing. day. We used pencils all of 2 times- and only one of the exercises was worth the while.
-Derwent watercolor pencils. They're great, if you can bear the feeling of it's lead dragging across the paper.... I had a nice set that I never used because I literally could not the stand the feeling of that lead against paper. Same thing goes for those chalk pastel pencils. I can use chalk pastels, but not those pencils for whatever reason.Autism amirite?
-I also can't stand the texture of willow charcoal either.
-Copic 'blender'.
-Never having good line art.
-Never being able to draw the other eye if it's not at a 3/4s view with the head tilted down.
-Hands. I cannot. draw. hands. help.
-p e r s p e c t i v e. Something I understand, but can't actually do.
-Not being able to draw the scenes in my head. It drives me absolutely insane, as I'm sure it does for everyone else.
-Canson Mixed Media sketchbooks. Pencil smears at the lightest touch. So i can only use the more expensive strathmore variant because if not it's gonna be a hard time.
-Autodesk Sketchbook. Granted, I had an older, Express version but oh my god if it didn't completely hinder my progress with digital art. I'm far happier with clip studio paint.
Speaking of art software- the fact that SAI doesn't have a good mac version is a big pet peeve too. Guess that's what photoshop is for, but I don't like paying annually for things ok. It's why I play this game. bc there's no membership fees.
-Whenever my style gets too cartoony. I try hard to ensure that it doesn't but whenever I go through periods of not drawing, it always seems to revert.
-Getting lost in the sheer amount of unnamed layers (which always happens because I'm paranoid and make constant copies of layers as a fail safe for when I screw something up).

Honestly I could go on for hours, but I'll cap it right there for now. I wanna hear the things y'all can't stand.

Watching everyone do these gorgeous colored, finished pieces when you barely have enough motivation to finish a sketch. :( Please give me motivation!

screaming

- drawing with pencil and somehow getting smudges everywhere, on your palms, on your fingers

- coloring traditionally is a PROCESS; almost never fully pleased with the result

- finding & developing my own style; it's so difficult it makes me have a crisis

- legs

- hands i'm actually p good at... i practice those a lot just saying

- finding new interesting ways to draw things and ending up not liking it

- not having an art program or even a drawing tablet of any kind. someday--

-Nobody likes perspective.

-This whole digital art thing because I cannot figure it out.

-I also hate charcoal with the burning passion of a thousand imploding super novas.

-But even more so, I hate, hate, HATE newsprint and how I absolutely had to use it for my drawing class. This stuff is THE worst. Something about the sound and feel of charcoal against newsprint sets my teeth on edge.

Everything about my own.
Other peoples? There's maybe a handful of styles I don't like, but still think they look nice. My own? *shoves into a closet*

Also, hey! I can't draw hands either! I can kinda do a four finger claw-ish thing pretty well, but anything with five fingers? HA! It's gonna look so bad.
Also front facing/partially front facing snouts are hard. I can never get it to look right so I gotta go with a side view. Alternatively, I can't do human faces at any sort of angle either. Front facing is either.

Can't do poses. Poses are hard. says the person who's tried maybe once with a human character and then thought it looked like trash and erased it, never to do so again thusfar

And I'm just getting out of this 'everything must look the same on both sides' mindset I had with my own art for awhile so... There's that. I've actually gone back and looked through older art now and thought they looked fine, whereas before I thought they looked horrible. (Mind, I said 'fine' not 'oh my gosh this is my best work ever' so... Yeah... Still don't much like my own art, but I'm getting better at being proud of myself over a fair bit of it :D )
