TOPIC | Can I get some podcast recs?
Heya I need new stuff to listen to while I ignore the hundreds of unlistened episodes in my Podcast Account

I'm mostly looking for nonfiction/documentary style stuff but docudrama's fine too. narrative/audiodrama doesn't really catch my attention (believe me I've tried there are so so few exceptions and I don't need any more) (seriously don't rec me audiodramas) (this includes taz)

here's some stuff I already listen to to give you a gauge of what I like and also so you don't rec stuff that I been knew abt

Radiolab
Snap Judgment
Invisibilia
Pseudo/Escape Pod
Sawbones
Reply All
The Black Tapes/TANIS/RABBITS/The Big Loop/The Last Movie
Limetown
Blank Check
Point Mystic
The History of Fun
Heavyweight
Science Vs.
Song Exploder
Mystery Show (rest in piece you will be missed)
More Perfect
Crimetown
Freakonomics

Waow that looks like a lot when you put it like that. anyway thanks

I'm not sure how much you like writing podcasts, but one of my favorites is Writing Excuses. It's a podcast that focuses on the business and craft of writing genre fiction (sci-fi/fantasy/horror), and it's also really funny. Apparently you should start at Season 10 since that's when it starts getting really good (or I heard is generally a good starting point, since that's the season they did as an introductory masterclass), but since I'm terrible at following directions I started at the beginning and have liked even the really old episodes, although you can definitely see where they're trying to get their feet in the beginning.

Since you like Sawbones, I'd give the other McElroy shows a try. Especially My Brother, My Brother and Me. Sawbones is what got me into that one!

Nonfiction is my thing too, so I can rec a bunch:
  • Stuff You Should Know (and anything by How Stuff Works, really)
  • BackStory
  • Thinking Sideways
  • Generation Why
  • The Bright Sessions (not nonfic, but in the same vein as the PRA shows)
  • RISK
  • The Moth

@NotarySojac

Oh, that's fantastic, I could use more writing stuff in my life! Thank you!

@intothedrk

I actually do listen to mbmbam (well, sorta, i kinda fell off the wagon lately yfm; same w taz)!

Ugh, it's been a minute since I've listened to the moth, too. Altho I kinda prefer it as a radio show (that said I don't… own a radio so maybe i should go back to the podcast lol)

Backstory, Thinking Sideways, Generation Why and Risk are all right up my alley tho, thank you so much!

Hmmm I went through my subscriptions & found a few nonfiction podcasts you might like

Astonishing Legends - discussions of weird things throughout history
The Dollop - strange, hilarious stories from history; one host tells the story to his friend, whose thing is that he doesn’t know any of this wild stuff
Monster Talk - scientists discuss cryptids and strange animals
Oh No, Ross and Carrie - two people investigate unusual things people believe, like flat earth, various alien-related topics, and Ouija boards
Dark Poutine - true crime, in Canada

Some of them take multiple episodes to cover a topic, but all have good stand-alone episodes for you to get a taste of what they’re like. I hope this helps!

Ayyyy we got similiar tastes my dude. May I also recommend;

-Ologies- The host interviews an expert on a diffirent (an -ologist, get it?) subject every show

-This Podcast Will Kill You- A show made by two epidemiology PHd students. Every episode they discuss a diffirent well-known disease. (Cholera, smallpox, leprosy, etc.) Not super polished but still SUPER interesting

-99% Invisible- I have a feeling you probably know about this one already? Short episodes, a podcast about design.

-Criminal- A true crime themed podcast that covers some pretty unusual subjects. One particularily memorable episode covers the attempted murder of a tree.

-Revisionist History- Malcolm Gladwell history podcast, a bit difficult to explain, but try a few episodes!

-Mortified- People reading sections of embarrassing diaries they wrote during childhood. Strangely life-affirming.

Unexplained- The host discusses various unexplained events throughout history. Pretty self-explanatory
